4C engine maturity
 

Hi folks, as I decide to venture into 4-stroke engines , I have done some research and find that 4C technology is not as matured as 2C yet. The major issues in 4C are backfiring and idling dead stick, as some have feedback to me in this forum. Is there any effort by the major manufacturers such as OS and Saito to address these issues ? How are current 4C users overcoming these issues ? Thanks for the info.......... :)

Neither of the problems that you mentioned are issues with properly adjusted four-stroke engines. In fact, if anything, the four-stroke is more likely to land running than any glow two-stroke I've ran.

Backfiring is strictly a matter of running too lean, too much prop, etc. In other words, it doesn't happen when the engine is adjusted and operated correctly.

I would agree with Ed I have owned and operated at least a couple dozen differant 4 strokes and all ran very reliably once tuned properly and broke in. Idol can sometimes be slightly high when an engine is new . People come to forums to find help with problems , that dosen't mean it is a design flaw or low tech. problem, most problems with any engine happen because of a problem with set up somewhere . I am sure 4 stroke technology could always be improved but do we really need to, YS has probibly got the most complicated 4 stroke system , Obviously the others don't consider it to be something they wish to get into at this time.

Absolutely, and the 4 stroke operation is much more reliable than the 2-stroke as the exhaust and fuel/air mix are actively pumped in and out of the engine.

The only time I have had detonation was with my Saito 150 running coolpower 30, but changing from an OS F plug to a cooler 2 stroke type plug cured that in an instant.
