Tuned pipes....... who has theoretical or practical guidance in this area.

I would like to learn how to make a tuned pipe. The patient will be an AP.15. While I was breaking the engine in I noticed that it was very sensitive to exhuast extensions. Maybe I'm right maybe I'm wrong but this leads me to believe that some gains may be hiden here. I have done just a little searching and haven't found much. Anyone want to step up?

Martin Hepperle has a Java pipe simulator on his web pages. http://www.mh-aerotools.de/airfoils/

An excellent resource. Thanks much!

If you can find a book titled "The Two Stroke Tuners Handbook" by Gordon Jennings there is an amazing amount of information included. I knew Mr. Jennings from my old motorcycle racing days and his knowledge was legendary. This is mainly for motorcycle engines but the theories and formulas work for our applications. I found the book on the web in .pdf format at http://www.chuckbunnell.com/kart/jennings/jennings.html. Not the best appearing but readable.

Another great book can be bought from the SAE. It was written by Gordon Blair and is titled The Design and Simulation of Two-Stroke Engines. This book is the definitive text on how to design two-stroke engines and exhaust systems.
I have to ask, why are you interested in designing and building your own tuned pipe when you can buy a very effective one from Macs? Do you intend to make it from composite? Or are you skilled at welding aluminum?

Mike,
Thanks very much for posting the link to a copy of Gordon Jennigs's book.
Having a copy of Ricardo's and Blairs work, Jennings's extremely practial approach now completes the lot.

Do you know a link to the blair programs? They were not included in the book (bought from Amazon).

Gordon Blair's software is rather old and clunky - it was written back when Win 3.1 was the operating system of choice. TSR Racing ( http://www.tsrsoftware.com/index_2.html ) sells much better software that is based on Gordon Blair's work.

I couldn't find Gordon Jenning's book at the link given above either.

The link ends in a dot! when removed, it opens OK.
I know the TSR web pages. They sell even the simplest formulae that most of us would provide for free.
Example, The cone volume calculator for $39 ??

Preivers, I didn't say one should buy ALL of TSR's software ;)

But if you do purchase any of it you will discover that it is a lot easier to use than what Gordon Blair initially published. Tom Turner over at TSR has developed an easy to use integrated package aimed at the professional motorcycle/snowmobile/personal watercraft tuner's market and it is priced accordingly.
