Moki 1.8
 

i'am running a moki 1.8 in my hangar 9 edge that i can't get to run properly. i'am swinging a 20x8 master airscrew prop. the proplem is i can't get it to transition from mid range to full throttle. it just seems like it smothers out. exspecialy if you do the wall into the hover it seems that you run out of power until it falls out of the hover then the engine will pick back up. what prop are you all running on the moki 1.8? any help would be greatly apreciated. thanks

Since I bought my Moki 1.8 three years ago, I have run a Zinger 18-8 (tried 18-8, 18-10, 20-8 various brands) on the two planes it has powered, and use only Byron FAI fuel, OS#8 plug with a Cline PFCS regulator. Never and I mean NEVER have had a problem!

These engines require quite a bit of break in time, a lot more than your average 40 or 61 glow. If you have a fairly new engine just have to wait untill you run a few more gallons through it. But, Take it easy, run slightly rich and you will be rewarded with an awesome engine. I have mine in a Midwest Super Stinker and it will easily hover at half stick - and thats NO NITRO fuel. Also, if you run even 5% fuel you will have to add a head shim of 5 thou or so or you will get predetonation.

May be too lean
 

The behavior you describe sounds like the main needle may be too lean. I tend to over lean this engine a bit when tuning by ear because if you are used to the smaller engines, you tend to tune them until they scream. This engine never gets the high pitched whine like the small glow engines.
I run a 18x10 prop on low nitro fuel (between 0 and 5%). I have used a Cline regulator in the past, but it was sticking open so I have now removed it and my 180 runs fine without it.
ajcoholic is right about break-in. Mine was not right until 5 gallons of fuel.
Also, make sure you use large fuel tubing. ANd a large clunk in the tank. Disconnect the tube from the carburetor and connect about 8 inches of tubing. let it hang down below the tank and let it siphon into a measuring cup. It should flow at a rate of several ounces per minute. If there is some constriction in the system, the thirsty Moki will lean out in flight.

thanks for the help guys your were right , to lean. i got the old tach out and adjusted the high side i was amazed at how much to lean i had it. i adjusted to max rpm and backed off 300 rpm and the engine ran superbly. hope i didnt hurt my engine. it runs good now. thanks all :D
