enya 40, model 6002
yesterday i first started an old enya 40 model 6002. after cleaning and replacing all the bolts i went outside to start the engine. with the high speed needle set to 2.5 turns and the low-end needle set to whatever, the engine cought me by suprise and fired from the first flip of the propeller. the engine is mounted inverted in a 1.8m span graupner piper cub j-3 and is swinging a 11x5 home made fiber-glass propeller. wow what an engine. i belive its one of the easiest to start and run engine i ever owned.

Red, the 6002 .40 is a real keeper. When I got into RC in 1976, my buddy bought a brand new model 6002 .40 Enya as his first engine. This engine was surprisingly strong for a loop-scavenged design, and actually out-revved the then in-vogue O.S. FSR .40 (static revs, both turning Taipan 10x6 props). Admittedly, the OS unloaded much more impressively once in the air but the Enya really surprised a lot of people with its performance.
He still has this engine - it's soaking in fuel after a 27 year lay-off and will hopefully be started soon. I will post his static revs once he bolts on an APC or MA prop for reference. |

The strange thing about the 6002 Enyas is that the 40 has a Dykes ring but the 45 has a single normal ring. I never did figure out why. Very good engines and they last just about forever :)

I've mounted one in a trainer for my children but I can't get the thing to idle. It dies after less than a minute and when trying to accelerate from idle. You've got to raise the throttle very slowly and be prepared to "catch" it from stalling. Is there a particular fuel blend and glow plug combination that I should be using? Any tips on how to tune out the problem?

RTD, it sounds like it's running too lean at idle. Being an airbleed carb, it will have a faily narrow calibration range for idle mixture.
My recommendation is (if you aren't already) to try 80/20 Methanol/Oil and make sure the oil contains at least some castor. We used to run ours on 80/20 using pure castor oil. Adding nitro will only serve to increase its fuel mixture requirements possibly beyond where the carb's idle mixture is calibrated. Good luck! |

I also have an enya 40, and 45 6002, and your right after years of siting in a box they both fired right up. The only problem I'm having is the strap mount for the muffler, I just can't get it to stay tight. After a couple of flights the muffler will become lose and stall the motor. Any Ideas?

I used a metal hose clamp to hold the muffler on my Enya .15 IV and it has held very well. I cut it the strap, and then at the new ends I cut the middle of a couple of the "threads'' so I could put the muffler screws through it. Then tightened via the hose clamp screw, not the muffler screws.
Of course, you could also just try lock washers on the muffler screws, but I suspect the hose clamp is more secure. Jim |

Hi!
You should not use 80/20 fuel!!!! The engine can tolerate it but will not be as easy to set as if you used more nitro! 5-15% nitro is imperative to use for good behavior! Enya 3 or OS 8 glowplug are good ones but most warm or medium glow plugs will work! A suitable tank size is 240cc (8oz) not bigger!!! And mounted according to the "tank-mounting-rule"! |

My Guess - Too lean - an experience flier advised me to wind out the HS needle 5 turns and then lean it out (on my Enya 60X, air bleed carb, running 10% Nitro.... similar problems to RTD) |

Each and every one needs optimization (prop, glow plug & compression adjustment) for burning various amounts of nitromethane. Some engine manufacturers are still doing things the old fashioned way of providing the engine out of the box with the most compression. Enya used to do that and they still might. That is a service as long as they provide a cylinder head shim or two to lower the compression. Some folks cannot access low nitro fuel and being able to lower the compression is very important. I've been yearning for running some glow engines for a while now, so pulled out this old Enya, with my 5% mix, still swings a 10x7 prop at 11,000RPM, flies great!
