Engine Poll

Should I use a Norvel eninge for my 48" wingspan herr Piper J-3 Cub? If so, should I use AME or BigMig? What's the difference? Should I use .049 or .061 for realistic Cub-like flying? I'm a beginner, so I want the right engine. People already told me that an OS ,10 LA is too powerful and fast, and that's what the hobby shop expert recommended. Thanks.

This is your third posting of a poll of "best" engine manufacturers. Didnt you learn anything from the first two??
What's the point of beating this into the ground??

Use the O.S. LA .10....

Those other " Cox " type engines don't put the
kind of constant power you will need to fly the
Cub, nor do they have any decent idle. The .10
size ( proper r/c ) engine will be perfect for it. ;)

This little plane is a 40 inch "Slow-Bee", with an
O.S. .15 R/c old style. Not a problem. You'll be
flying it around at half-throttle, and will have lots
of extra power available for climbing, and loops
and stuff. Don't waist your money on those little
" gonna end up as a paper weight motors ". :stupid:

Dave.

Norvel bigmig .074--great engine for a 1/2A sized small plane .

Oh , I don't know...... Some folks would say the Saito 180 would be a good start. Don't get the 120 it weighs almost the same and doesn't come near the power of the 180. They DO have throttles.
A little Cox type engine is no match for the mighty Saito !
I knew a guy once who had a Saito and had very little trouble with it when he got it running. It was even less trouble when it was not running. His cat walked into the prop and the sudden stop broke the crankshaft but the cat came out worse than the engine. My cat really likes the Laser because he hates the taste of fuel with nitro in it. Anything over 5% and the cat won't even touch it , He must come from European stock. He doesn't need Nitro and that makes him a lot better than the American breed of cat .(sniff!) So I guess it may sound to some like I am rambling ..Oh the best engine..... It HAS to be European or all that snobery is baseless. Just Which European engine is BEST is yet to be clearly defined regardless of polls

The Norvel is the very engine I would choose for the plane you mentioned. It is ALMOST European too !

This is a loaded poll. I like the osfx two strokes and the ys 4 strokes. just depends on the plane for which one I use.

Nitro

LF, are you sure you didn't have just a little too much nitro in your drink.

Need help!

I have a Lanier, indicator, with a 43 "wing span. I to am thinking of using a norvell engine, possible a 061 RC BIG MIG, however was not sure what to expect. will this engine be capable of pulling a heavier airframe?
Also, i am , or have made several modifications to the plane, for instance, i have repostioned the main gear back some way, and installed a steerable nose gear, attached to the ruder servo. I have noticed however that i will need to add a skid to the lower fuselage, this given the gear sits low, and will bump the rudder on landing, possibly take off's to.
I read a few posts up, that the norvel's do not maintain power, please explain this, i have never had any engine other than an os 10, this was some time ago, and have sine misplaced it, this to was some time ago.
I defiantly wish to get into the air, and i can use all the help possible.
Oh, any ideas on how to paint over fabric covering, and what paint to use so that i do not get paint crazing, like you get with laquor paints when applying the second coat.

Thanks
Ryan

I would go with the OS LA .10 myself. A 48" wing and a cub frame is a bit big for a 1/2a engine.

Then again, I'm a racer :)

I have a Norvel .074 mounted in a 60" span Sig Ninja...Does a heck of a job, too.Think it's enough for that cub? OS fans to the contrary, the Norvel .074 will smoke those .10s. I have 6 myself, 2 .061s and 4 .049s. The .074 is the most versatile and well-behaved small engine I've ever come across.

The Norvel .074 will easily outperform an OS .10. For more info do a search for the Norvel .074 in the 1/2a forum.

I had a norvel .061 rc in the herr cub and I only flew it at about 1/3 to 1/2 throttle for scale but it really role's when floored. The big mig 061 rc will be fine! Brian

Hahahahahaha :D

LOOK - This question is over 3 years old [X(] You guys are answering a question about a plane that has long ago crashed, been taken to the dump, and turned into fertilizer :)

If tht kid has not chosen an engine in 3 years, he is never going to [sm=bananahead.gif]
