Need engine advice
 

I have recently purchased a Seagull Models Space Walker II and it is powered (under-powered) with an OS 40 LA. Is there any way to increase the power output of this engine?

Does anyone have a recommendation for a a 46-50 size engine for this plane?

Things can be done with nitro/prop/pipe combinations that will realize a bit more power. What prop size and what fuel type are you using? Is the muffler a stock unit?

Yes, there are some things you can do to boost output - tuned exhaust is one. The OS .40LA is a good engine ... but the engine is what it is. An entry level sport engine with limited capability.

However, for what it will cost you to purchase/add/modify anthying to do with the engine, its not worth it weight wise or cost wise.

For about $60 or less (for the most part, what it might cost you for a tuned exhaust system) you can buy a new Thunder Tiger .46 or Super Tigre GS-40 or similar. Both will outperform the LA .40 easily, and both are excellent engines. There are others in the same general price range too - just provided as examples.

My opinion is that you save what ever $$ you might consider improving the engine, and use that toward the purchase of an engine with the performance you desire.

Sell the engine on ebay and buy a Magnum 46, my favorite, but the Thunder Tiger 46 is also very good. Both of these engines with a $15 muffler can become very good engines for 3D flying, which I imagine is what is next. You won't need the new muffler for the spacewalker.

Take the baffle out of the muffler, take off any exhaust extensions, use a 10x6 APC prop and retune -

I am using a 10 X 6 prop with 15% and it just isn't going to be enough. I think I will just plan on a new motor for this one and use this one in something else later or use it for a trade.

I think I remember the Thunder Tiger bolting in the same holes as the LA. The Magnum XLS series will also. Yhey will be minimum impact construction wise in the changeover.

Super Tiger GS40 or what ever the current model is will be the cheapest alturnative for you to achieve satisfactory results.

If you show up at the field with a LA 40 with a pipe on it, everyone will be whispering to each other about the combination. You may be popular but not the way you want to be popular.

Other similar engines are the GMS .47 and the Tower Hobbies .46. However, of all the engines mentioned I like Thrunder Tiger .46 Pro. That is one performing engine! If those engies are not enough, then go for the Super Tiger 51 (ringed) and that will really get you plane moving.
