Assistance with YS160
 

I am about to order a YS160 and am looking for a plane for it. Narrowed it down to the CG Ultimate or SU26MX. I do like the DPM Exyra 330 ... its a big plane and I wonder if anyone can tell me if the YS160 can power a 12 lbs plane for IMAC flying. Please don't tell me to look for a gasser ... I know how good it flies on a gasser. Thanks!

If you can get it 12lbs it would fly great with the 160DZ, it has about as much power as a moki 1.80, if you run 30% nitro in it (whats recommended). I would think an 18x8, 19x8 prop, maybe someone else has a thought on it?

I think maybe not 12 lbs ... maybe about 13.5 lbs. Hmmmm ... anyone else with thoughts? I was thinking if only it can swing a 20x8 @ 8,000 RPM that would be fine.

13.5 pounds??? What are you gonna hang on it?

My CG Ultimate ARF, with a Laser 150 (30 ounces), weighs 9.8 pounds dry.

I'm doing the Sukhoi right now; I'll estimate it is going to weigh 11-12 pounds at most.

Neither of these airplanes are over-built. In fact, the Sukhoi is made in the latest fashion, using interlocking structural members with numerous laser-cut lightening holes, etc. If you get either one of them up to 13.5 pounds, you'll have to work at it.

I bet that engine would be perfect for a DP Extra 330L. And by the way, my Moki 1.80 pulls around a 14 pound CAP 232 with authority so if the 160DZ is as powerful as a Moki 1.80 then you will have a good combo. What does the 160DZ weigh?

Steve ... 13 lbs is the DPM Extra! Not the Ultimate, hehehe ... sorry. I am nost inclined to go with the CG Ultimate but we can't get one here. SU26 is my next option, would be great with the YS160, little overkill perhaps.

Joe - I think the DPM Extra might be out of the question. A friend built 2 of them, one with a 120 4C and he says performance was only marginal. Says needs a nice 40cc gasser to get the most out of her. Again, its really hot and humid here, we lose about 20% performance from you guys in the US. May I know what sort of prop you are using with your Moki and what is your engine taching?

YS 160 will definitely be enough for the DP Extra. I have a 140 DZ in the DP Ultimate (12.5-lb), and it has more power than I could make use of. Highest thrust I measured is 21 lb, using Bolly 19x6 carbon prop. So a 160 DZ on 30% nitro and the right prop should pull 24 lb. thrust. That's more than enough for IMAC'ing a 16-lb. plane.

I also have a Moki 180, and I do believe that my 140 DZ on 30% nitro is just as powerful as the Moki 180 on 5% nitro. Unfortunately we can't get more power w/ Moki by increasing nitro. I think 160 DZ should be stronger than the Moki 180.

For reference, Moki 210 swings APC 20x8W @ 7500 rpm and pulls 25 lb. (RCM review). So 20x8W @ 8000 is a bit ambitious for the 160 DZ. Maybe 7500 on this prop should make you happy.

Seany to the rescue!!! Hahaha ... thanks for the info. I got my doubts for the DP Extra, feedback from people who owned it is to go for a 40cc gasser min. I would love the DP Ultimate, just that I need to somehow source it ... I think I know a second hand one. I just love the way a bipe snaps.

I might be able to get away with a 20x6 @ 8,000 RPM. Looking at ThrustHP (I use it as a mere referrence), there will be a great load of thrust for sure with that prop. Yeah ... Moki's and high nitro is a no no ...

I had (note tense) the DP Extra with a YS 140 DZ [&o] . Perfect choice. Defineatly go for it. 3D all day. Do a low level wall into a hover without fear. The 160DZ can only beter then my 140dz but I don't know how.

I get 8400 RPM running rich (peak is 8700) on a Bambula 18x8. Great combo.

Joe,

Can you please comment on the difference between Bambula 18x8 and APC 18x8W? Other than the weight difference, how do these 2 vary in thrust and peak rpm on the same engine? I've been interested in trying out the Bambula, but haven't made the call to order yet. Just want some reference before I committ. Thanks!

Flyhard - good to know that the DP Extra can be flown with the YS140DZ. That's one plane I will look into now. I love the way she looks. Alternative for me can also be the WM Extra 160.

I ran my US 140DZ over the weekend running a 18x8 Bambula, and I didn't have my sophisticated thrust measuring device handy (digital fishing scale), but it definately felt like it was pulling more than the 18x8W apc i used to have on it. At 6000' altitude it swang it at a cool 83-8400 rpm. I couldn't run it long because the wife wasn't happy when the smoke from the DZ (a very smokey engine) set off every smoke alarm in the house (it was a nice day so we had the windows open). If i can find my fishing scale, I will try to get out to the field and make some measurements for you on the 18x8 Bambula. I am also thinking that maybe a Mejzlik 20x6 may be good for the 160dz?

The Bambula is more prop load than the APC. The Paddles on the Bambula are bigger and will keep the engine where the peak torque is (8000-8500). The Peak RPM on the APC is about 600-1000 more than the Bambula and I would not want to run the engine that high. I can't comment on thrust since I have not measured it. The Bambula prop pulls the plane around very well and is 2.5 ounces compared to the 4.5 ounce APC so spool up is quick. I

something tells me that with the right prop we can get the YS160 to turn a 20x6 at about 8,200 RPM. Hmmmm ... most interesting.

I have actually run a Pro Zinger 20x6 on my 1.40DZ at about 7900rpm. I would imagine the 1.60 could do it just fine. At my altitude it measured about 18 lbs of thrust! Pretty good.

Can't wait to get mine and run her on Cool Power 30% heli fuel ... my YS110 runs amazingly on that fuel. Peaked an APC 16x6 at 10,200 w/out muffler. I am gonna run a 17x6 to get the revs down rather than having to just run it rich.

Hi Guys, sorry to dig up this thread after such a long time, but I just ordered a YS110 & YS160 for my spring projects. Does anybody have any more info regarding how the YS160 has performed with the larger props 19"-20. I figured that I,d finally jump onto the YS band wagon after running OS ,SAITO & Moki engines over the past few years and am looking forward to the experience. thx Dave

Add me to the list of those interested in YS160 performance with various props. I've searched around and found very little info from anyone having direct experience with the engine.

I just received my new 160 and I am mounting it in a 150 size H9 P-51. This is my second 150 Mustang, the first had a Saito 200Ti and I wasn't completely satisfied with the performance. I am hoping that the big YS will make the plane really go. BTW the guys at Central recommended a 17x12W APC for my application...
