Engine Identification

1 Attachment(s)
My cousin just got a motorized skateboard from his autoshop. He has sent me some pictures of the engine, and we are trying to figure out what we are even looking at. I run nitro trucks, and I don't even know what some of this stuff is... If anyone could give us an idea of how to even start this engine, what kind of plug it uses, or anything.

My cousin just told me that on the crankcase it says D&B and has a vin number.

It's an old Orline. 1.2 ci if I remember correctly. Originally used in a small chainsaws, generators and waterpumps, in the '50's & '60's.

So is it a gasoline engine? You think we could get it running?

And why does it say D&B on the case? Isn't D&B an RC aircraft engine company?

O and R engine from way back. Ohlson and Rice used to make glow engines also. This one is 1cu. in. and 1 hp. Not that good of an engine. I have some parts out in the garage somewhere. Clean up the D& B and I'll wager it really says O&R:D

Kiekhafer/Mercury years ago made some air cooled two stroke engines. Yours looks like one of them to me. I had a home-made rotary lawn mower with one on it. The perfectly round cylinder and the (missing) cast blower housing were almost trade marks of the Mercury 2s engines.

The air cooled Mercurys were mostly government surplus, used in WW 2 as auxilliary power units in many applications.

Yours could well be built by a later company copying the original Mercury design. They weren't bad engines, but often hard to start.

You are missing the flywheel and the blower housing, if you can find ones to fit it shouldn't be too hard to get it running again, but I really don't think it would be worth the effort.

Bill.

I'll tell him to take a closer look at the "D&B." He couldn't make it out that well, so I would not be suprised if it really said O&R.
If it becomes too complicated to fix up this engine, Maybe he'll stick a newer engine in there as a project.
