.20-.30 four stroker?
 

I am in the process of planning my next project. (If the wife only knew. :eek: )

I am looking at a TT Lazy Tiger P-51. This plane calls for a .20-.30 2 or 4 cycle. I have been bitten by the four stroker bug, so I am looking for one in that size. I am leaning towards a OS FS 40. The .20 - .30 four strokers just look a little anemic compared to their 2 cycle counterparts. And the .50+ crowd is a little on the heavy side for a 3lb plane. Do you think the FS .40 is a good match. What would you all recommend? Thank you in advance. :)

I agree about the .26 four stroke being a little weak, for hardcore flying. Great for "Sunday Flying" though.
Unfortunately, if you like four strokes, you dont have a lot of options for "high performance" until your up there in size, and bucks.
I realize it is kind of a cop out, but what I do is bite the bullet and use a hot-NOT OVERSIZE 2 stroke in my wild stuff, and save the four strokers for the "regular performance" and scale or scale like stuff.
There is a trend (just read any of the magazines) to put a larger engine than the recommended range on your plane, this causes all kinds of other problems. ( Kind of like putting a V-8 in a Volkswagen- It goes like he-- and can be fun, but it isn't practical and has limited use). If you're looking for an airplane to overpower, the Lazy Tiger is the wrong one to buy. :) A .30 4stroke would be perfect for this one. Don't read too much into the horsepower figures. 2strokes make all kinds of HP at high RPM - not quite in with the character of this "slow flyer".

Any of the .30 4stroke from Magnum, OS or Saito should work very well. They can all swing big props, normally meant for .40 2strokes, and make good torque at lower RPMs. The OS FS40 is good too and at some 12 Oz. doesn't sound too heavy for a 3lbs plane.

FS-26 Surpass
 

My OS 26Surpass on 15% nitro with an APC10x6 flyes my 61" GP J-3 Cub very well. It flyes well on 1/4 throttle, and has enough pull for nice, round loops. (the airplane is at 4-4.5lbs, I have also used floats with very nice results)
It really sips fuel. (15min on less than 3oz)

The 30Surpass should be even better, although is heavier than the 26.

Hello!
Do not do the mistake and mount a .40 foustroke on this plane!
A 26-.30 engine like the OS .26 or the Saito .30 is perfect for this plane!

A .30 would work great but if you want to hover, you'll need a .50 or larger four-stroke. I'm speaking from experience.

Just a plug for the little Surpass .26, I love mine; after several hundred flights and a few crashes (it's on its third plane) it is better than ever. Compression is absolutely perfect, and it has no problem hauling my 3lb. Astro around, maybe not quite unlimited vertical with a Zinger 10X6 but close enough for me. I fly on the wing anyhow, so usually 1/3 to 1/2 throttle does just fine. Also very quiet, at low throttle it really purrs like a kitten. Starts first flip every time and with a 150cc tank I have to worry about the battery long before fuel is a problem. Amazing little engine.

Hey Looneytunes, I have the lazy P-51. I used the OS- 40. It was also hard for me to decide. I am glad I went with the 40. The plane flies great. I can put the flaps down a little (dual aileron servos) and almost fly at walking speed with a small amount of throttle, then I can power up just before it stalls. It has great power for nice big maneuvers. But even with the 40 it won't go vertical very far. I like to back off the throttle coming down and power up going vert. As for the weight I put the battery behind the servos to compensate for the bigger engine. I did not add tail weight.

After much agonizing, I decided to give the FS 40 a try. I am not looking for hovering capability here (I have a Magic for that). Just fun flying and goofing off. :stupid:
