More Power?
What can I do to a Saito 72 to give it more power?
Header? Tuned Pipe? |

NITRO, Saitos like NITRO!!!!!!!

Nitro is great!
But is there anything else? Tuned pipes increase power for 2 strokes a ton. What about the 4 bangers? |

A tuned pipe wont do anything for a 4 stroke. They give 2 strokes a boost because they create a resonant back pressure wave which actually forces some of the exhaust mixture back into the cylinder for a supercharging effect. This works on a 2 stroke because the overlap in intake and exhaust port opening timing can let some of the unburned fuel/air to go out the exhaust.

A new Saito 100 would make your Saito 72 a lot faster.
Enjoy, Jim |

Yeah, I would think so. :bananahea
I don't know how long my Ultra Stick 40 would hold up to that on though. I should just put my Saito 180 on the Ultra Stick! |

There's been a little good natured kidding going on here but there's nothing that beats running 30 heli with a 13-6 APC on your 72. It'll scream and you'll be happy. That 30 heli cost almost double what 10% cost though. The cost effectiveness of a pipe on your 72 just isn't there unless somebody gives you one.
Being as it's an Ultra stick, you might get away with a 14-5 APC if you can find one? That'll give you more hang time if that's what you're looking for. Enjoy, Jim |

Jim (W8YE), I just gotta ask ya. Is that persons face in your Avatar You, Everett, or Delmar ?

It's a scene from the movie "Oh Brother, Where Art Thow?" It's Delmar kneeling beside Everett up in the barn just as the law came for them. It is the scene where Everett say's "Damn, we're in a tight spot". I needed a small aviatar that was somewhat unique and I copied this one off the web.

Wheww, thank goodness that it's not you Jim. And you are right, it is unique.
It scares the hell out of me every time that I see it ! |

I'm trying to think but I cannot remember his first name? But I thinking Jim Tarentino? is Delmar. He's about as Italian as one could be but he must be a good actor to play Delmar. I'll look it up and come back and edit this.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ NOTE: I went and looked and I'm all wet. This guy is Tim Blake Nelson and he was born in 1965 in Tulsa Ok. He graduated from Brown U. The third guy was John Turturro. But he's not in this picture. Everett is George Clooney. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ I tried to have Delmar and Everett together on there but it took up too many 'K' so I cropped it down to just Delmar and changed the saying from the tight spot bit to what is there now. Since then someone else picked up the 'tight Spot' saying. Enjoy, Jim |

I take it that you're a fan of the movie? :)
Haven't seen it myself but if I hear it mentioned on NPR one more time I guess I'll have to see what all the shouting's about. |

The movie is a comedy. It seems to be a satire on the Southern US of the depression era.
Enjoy, Jim |

Yah I got that. Supposed to be some sort of modern-day retelling of Homer's Odyssey (no kids, I'm not talking about the Simpson's new minivan.)

what you can do for four strokes, is an old motorcycle tuners trick. which has been proven to work best for naturally aspirated engines in almost all situations. what you do is get a good length of decent sized exhaust tubing from the engine and spray a line of paint down it. then you run the engine for a good length of time (a couple of flights would be ideal) then you will notice the paint has burnt for a certain amount of length from the motor. you then cut the exhaust pipe off where it has stopped burning off, this should provide better power than any exhaust system. of course planes are a different ballgame, different rpm ranges.. it sure would be loud unmuffled too!
