I was sent the below synopsis after a series of emails back and forth with the patent holder of the below topic. If you are somewhat knowledgeable or an expert in model engines would like to hear comments & thoughts about this...

I wish to share my research related findings to - Efficient Combustion : ALTCBC : Accelerated Laminar Total Clean Burn Combustion which is now recognized by my US Patent 6237579 granted on 27th May 2001 for my - Design To Improve Turbulence In Combustion Chambers. More details to my single handed achievements related to my simple,cost effective revolutionary approach can be reviewed and accessed freely at www.uspto.gov & www.delphion.com. This design achieves a better mix within the charge consisting of Oxygenated air along with particulated fuel prior to ignition. Once ignited this unique design layout further promotes and achieves multiple flame front propagation through the compressed charge during the process of Combustion. This further results in Accelerated Laminar Total Clean Burn Combustion - ALTCBC which now occurs in the shortest possible time frame in the absence of Preignition & Detonation !!! Leading To distinct improvements in Torque & Thermal Efficiencies out of 2 & 4 cycle I C Engine Combustion in comparison to known designs. I have successfully transformed over 40 different types of 2 & 4 cycle Engines of different capacities and configuration over the years to assume what could be possibly taking place inside the Combustion Chamber to achieve this improved efficiency in comparison to the same standard engines - Before & After ! I lack the facilities and access to sophisticated updated equipment to really be able to look into the Combustion Chamber to understand and annalize this phenomenon :- ALTCBC. Is It A Better Mix Of The Air & Fuel Trapped Within The Cylinder Prior To Ignition ? - Or - Multiple Flame Front Propagation Once Ignited ? - Or - Both Taking Place - One After The Other!!! To Result In this phenomenon - ALTCBC. How could such a simple effective concept of placing one of a Groove or Channels or Passages through the available squish areas within the combustion chamber have escaped everybody's imagination in the last Century of Innovation and Engine Development - And - Why ??? Are Manufacturers skeptical to any New Ideas coming from outsiders !!! - Especially when they come from unknown - Die-hard - Back door garage personalities burning midnight oil, deciphering the limitations of Combustion with logic based on first hand experience and self acquired knowledge !!! The Scientific & Industrial community globally are yet to wake up to this unique new idea and just can't believe this simple concept works and comes from an unscripted unknown Inventor from Mysore - India. The delphion link doesn't work and after waiting for an interminable time to get to the uspto link it showed no document available for that patent number so I can only guess at what he's talking about.
The only clue he gives is this.."How could such a simple effective concept of placing one of a Groove or Channels or Passages through the available squish areas within the combustion chamber have escaped everybody's imagination..." OK, so it sounds like instead of having just a plain flat (or slightly tapered) squish band like we're all familiar with he's using grooves to make one or more high speed jets of mixture to swirl around the combustion chamber. These would promote turbulence to give a more even distribution of mixture and once ignited the turbulence will carry the flame front through the remaining mixture (in effect giving a faster flame front and pressure rise time). A similar system is used in at least one CL speed engine which has angled slots cut into the squish band. |

What tests has he done to verify his findings. The above quote blares out at me as only vague assumption without imperical testing. How does he know his modifications are actually doing anything, in other words? |

Sounds like a self-professed scientific wizard with a self-image problem, who lacks the resources to promote himself and the data to back up his claims.

Did not know if this technically has any validity and is worthwhile or not. Seems to be valid to some degree but maybe not presented as well as it could be.

Here is the abstract from the patent A combustion chamber design layout of grooves or channels or passages formed in the squish band to further enhance turbulence in the charge prior to ignition as compared to existing designs with squish bands or hemispherical layouts in I.C. Engines. These grooves or channels or passages after ignition direct the flame front to cause multipoint ignition during the combustion cycle resulting in the following distinct advantages over existing designs in practice. First, quicker and complete clean burn combustion; second, lower operating temperatures due to the higher flame velocities; third, enhanced torque and power through the entire range resulting in better fuel economy with lower Emissions; and fourth, smoother engine operation through the entire range enhancing engine life. I did this mod a while ago in a Moki gas engine, while searching for ways to make it run smoothly on glow fuel. While it did help to some degree, the engine soon succumbed due to a failing big end. Glow ignition placed too heavy a loads on the crank pin. |

I read the patent, and, having three patents to my name and knowing a little bit about how they're written, I believe Volfy is close to the truth. The patent reads like a sermon not like a disclosure of an invention. My experience is that sermons are used to to convince people to have faith.
Still, his invention appears to be unique and may actually work. The market will determine if it has commercial value. BTW, I'm an SAE member and have seen a few paper presentations on combustion analysis. The engineers and scientists doing this work have talent, creativity, financial backing, and strictly adhere to good laboratory practice. This is true high technology work. I have no doubt that this field will continue to excel in the future. |

In filing patents, we have to do patent searches as a matter of course, just so we don't run into an prior art and nulify ourselves. I was doing research on intertial propulsion for another company some years back, and I couldn't believe some of the patents I read. Some of them are bizzare; some look like perpetual motion machines; others are simply impractical; still others are downright STUPID!!! Kinda make you wonder what da heck the Patent Office was thinking granting them in the first place. :) Still, patents can make great reading material - from being educational to amusing. |
