Paint on huge props?
Is the any danger oh throwing my prop too bad out of balance by putting a small dot of paint on the tips of my 16-8 prop to help see the edge while runing the engine on test stand??
(Saito 150) Im not use to this thing yet, I think thisll help me. |

Roger,
If you do not have a balance, you can just put the same amount on each side. In the long term you need to get a balancer. The Top Flite magnetic balancer will not do a very job on the 16 and 18" props. It's just not strong enough. They will drop out of the holder. The Robart High Point would be the best one for those big props. The big props are almost always out of balance when you get them. Jim |

I beg to differ. My Top Flight balancer does a fine job on my 18" prop. It does tend to fall toward the bottom of the magnets, but it isn't off them yet.

You can differ all you want to. I have both and the Top Flite is a piece of junk gimmick compared to the High Point balancer. I bought the Top Flite first and after discovering how poor it was for the big props, I went and bought the Robart balancer.
That's not to say you cannot balance a 16 or 18" prop on one for I have done it many times myself. And the dropping to the bottom of the magnets is the problem I was referring to. One has to place the mandrel in postion between the magnets very carfully or it will drop to the table. When you have to go about that 15 -20 times to get a prop balanced, it becomes annoying. There's not that much difference in price and if you are going to go out and get one, then buy a real one. With the High point, you can do open ended balancing whereby you can balance spinners and back plates. The mandrel is much nicer on the High Point too. You can also balance anything much heavier than a 18" prop. I've made several gas engine conversions of weed whackers and I always balanced the flywheels on the Robart balncer. It is the Standard of the Balancers to which all others are compared. If you already have a Top Flite balancer, then enjoy it to it's limitations. Jim |

I have the Top Flite balancer and I have to agree with Jim.Works fine up to a 14" prop.Anything larger becomes a bit of a problem. Not so much as falling off,but it just doesn't do an accurate enough of a job for me.Now that I'm starting to run gassers.I'm getting the Robart.Just one mans opinion.
