Help: TT pro .46 problems
 
I just recently pulled a plane out of the closet that i built last year but never got around to flying and have been trying to get the TT pro .46 to run properly. The plane has been sitting for a while with the engine only being run twice. So, now to the problems. First off, I recived the Thunder tiger pro and mounted everything for breaking in last augaust. The first times I tryed to run it it would start fine and run well around 50-60% throttle, but when I would get it up to full throttle the engine would slowly wind down and eventually die. This would happen every time that I would run the engine so I started to fiddle with the mixtures by richening up the mixture or leaning it up. But everything resulted in a full throttle wind down. Next I went and picked up new glo plugs and a fresh bottle of fuel but still the same thing happend. Currently I have found that if its runn sloberly rich it will stay constant and runn properly. So if anyone has encounterd this before or has any suggestions please enlighten me!!!!

Next, I have 6 oz. tank mounted right behind the engine. When the motor is running at speed the gas sloshes around the top of the tank and into the breather line and chokes the motor. But my question is how come when i remove the breath line that goes to the muffler the engine runs fine but when its connected it will choke? I am wondering if a new tank could help?

Your engine is out of adjustment and needs to be dialed in "correctly."

How would i dial it in correctly? is it something with the carberation? thanks for the help! I need to learn more about glow... to many electrics.

Could you have a blockage in the muffler pressure fitting causing the engine to go lean when the pressure line is connected?

If the engine has only been run twice, it probably isn't broken in yet. If not, and you're trying to completely lean it out, it will usually die. Break in an ABC/ABN engine only SLIGHTLY rich for 4-5 tanks. It should be fine then. Double-check the idle needle to make sure it isn't closed completely. The needles will interact on some engines.

There is no way fuel splashing into the pressure line inside the tank could be choking the engine. There is positive pressure from the muffler to the tank in that line. What's happening is the engine is running too rich to begin with, and the extra pressure caused by connecting the pressure line floods it. Be sure the pressure line is properly connected to the muffler. Check for a clogged pressure line. Be sure the klunk inside the tank is at least 3/8" away from the back wall. Also, if the fuel is splashing that much, you need to pad the tank more.

Thats exactly what i thought the other day but upon disassembling the muffler it was completly clean. THe motor is mounted on its side as its on a profile fuse. Do you think that the mufflers possition relative to the tank could be a problem?

Dr1Driver,

So things for me to check would be the idle screw, Set the mixture less rich, and more padding. Also, I agree that it is not totaly broken in, but shouldn't the engine be able to throttle up all the way to burn throught a tank, even at a slightly rich setting? So far i it keeps droping rpms after about 30sec. of wide open throttle.

You might set your high speed needle at 2 to 2.5 turns out to start and turn the low speed needle in 1/8 turn at a time unless it idles good for at least 30 sec or more then lean the high needle after that.

Are you running too large prop? Should be a 10-6 and not greater than a 11-6?

Basic initial setting for a TT PRO .46...

Low end needle...open it about 3 or 4 turns then close the throttle rotor all the way. Screw in the low end needle until it seats and then back it out 1/2 turn.

High end needle...close it down all the way and open it ~2 turns...close as necessary for proper running.

Use a HOT plug and 10% nitro fuel with 20% lube for initial runs. Use a 10x6 prop for the first run to get it to a lean setting at full throttle...do this quickly and shut it down! ...let it cool. Then put a 9x6 prop on it and wind it up to ~16K RPM and run it through a whole 6-8 oz tank at FULL throttle. Let it cool a LONG time! Put the 10x6 back on it and run it through 3-4 more full tankfuls at full throttle just leaner than the rich/lean break...cooling in between runs.

After all of that go put it on a plane. Piddle with the idle setting a bit to get it closer. After about 1 gallon of fuel has been through it you can get the idle setting REAL close. After 3-4 gallons you'll love this engine.

The best 'all around' props I have found for this engine are APC 10x6, 11x5 or 12x4...depending on the type of flying you like to do. The best plug is an OS #8 or Thunderbolt 4C. Fuel with more than 15% nitro is a waste of your money with this engine.
