Engine full of mud!!
 

Did a "lawn dart" into the local pond. Amazingly not much damage but the engine is wet and muddy. What is the best way to clean it? I know I should probably disassemble it, but any favorite cleaning solutions? Thanks,

Dont turn the prop yet. remove the engine from what's left of the plane. close the carb and clean the outside of the engine with rubbing alcohol or some solvent, even WD40.

When the outside is clean, remove the back plate and look inside. Swap it out wirth Q-tips or simular. Remove carb and look underneath for debre. Flush out with your cleaner. Remove the muffler and look inside the combustion chamber with a flashlight? Then turn it over and see what you have. Make sure it's well oiled when you are done.

I agree completely with w8ye, except I prefer using fresh fuel to flush the engine. Rubbing alcohol contains a lot of water and may cause rust problems. WD40 contains synthetics that you may not want in your engine.

what i would do is dissaemble it, and get 1 of those big bottles of marvel, and get a bucket, and jsut put all the parts in that, it wont hurt, cause i use the stuff for after run, and other guys too, so dont flame me

The first thing I would do after removal from whats left of the plane is hold the engine under running water to flush all the mud I could from the engine that has already been under water. At that point more water is not going to hurt anything. Then I would disassemble the engine to clean the parts. Even better is to send the parts through an ultrasonic detergent water bath before blowing them dry and oiling them with afterrun oil. At this point you can usually see if you have any damaged parts before re assembly.

How long does it have to rest before you clean the parts and re assemble or is it a final resting place?
