Thread lock
I was looking for some input on the best way to lock the header and muffler threads on a 4-stroke engine. I have used teflon tape before and it seemed to work ok. Does locktite work better? If so, what type of locktite works?

RE: Thread lock
Nix on the loctite. It can pull some of the aluminum when removing. Teflon tape and checking for tightness when HOT seems to be the concensus.

RE: Thread lock
I second the teflon tape method. ;)

RE: Thread lock
I have been using high temperature RTV for the threads and a replacement for the gasket. I haven't had a muffler come loose since I started using RTV about 3 years ago.

RE: Thread lock
I went through this here somewhere and several can verify it. I installed a jettstream muffler on a G2300 recently. I used Perematex threadlock. Alhtough it is high temp does not mean its right for the job which is what i learned. The pipe kept getting loose after 2 flights. This went on for weeks and was *&^%me off! Somebody here mentioned Prematex "Sleeve Retainer." It comes in the same small tube as the others and available at NAPA. This took care of the problem.
I guess the regular high tem high strength if fine but liquifies when it gets too hot. The sleeve retainer does not do this. |
RE: Thread lock
Thanks for help!

RE: Thread lock
Why don't you follow the engine instructions and put some oil (preferably caster oil) on the threads and torque it up. The oil will react to the heat and sort burn in a nice hard thread lock. But do not put Lock-tite or you will eventually regret it. Just run the jam nut up tight when it is cold and make sure it is still tight after a run and the oil will do the trick.
