The OS 160 is much more popular and will be more familiar to you. It is also more readily available.

Weekender:
ORIGINAL: w8ye The OS 160 is much more popular and will be more familiar to you. It is also more readily available. If you want the YS power at a better price and less weight than the OS, just get a Saito FA-180. Or get the Saito FA-150 and still have more power than the OS, and at a lighter engine weight. Bill. |
RE: YS 1.40 Vs OS 1.60 Who got Power
Sorry Bill, the OS 160 is more powerful than the Saito FA-150. The OS 160 can swing a 17x10 or an 18x8 prop on 15% fuel with ease. The Saito 150 can only swing a 16x8 prop.
|
RE: YS 1.40 Vs OS 1.60 Who got Power
So get the FA-180 and be done with it.
Or if you insist on the OS get the one that says "Magnum" on the box. Bill. |
RE: YS 1.40 Vs OS 1.60 Who got Power
Still, the OS are stronger than the Saito 180. See the tack readings from other users.
|
RE: YS 1.40 Vs OS 1.60 Who got Power
Just had a thought. If the OS in question is a two stroke, it might well be more powerful than the YS 140 also. I was thinking four stroke all the way.
Bill. |
RE: YS 1.40 Vs OS 1.60 Who got Power
OS does not make a 1.60 four stroke.

RE: YS 1.40 Vs OS 1.60 Who got Power
My bad. What about single cylinder?
|
RE: YS 1.40 Vs OS 1.60 Who got Power
I suspect the output of the YS 1.40 may be slightly higher than the OS 1.60 (2-stroke), but the OS is lighter, cheaper, and will run on lower nitro content fuel.

RE: YS 1.40 Vs OS 1.60 Who got Power
Thank you guy seems like OS 1.60 would fit better for my application
What do you guys recommend should I get OS 1.60 with standard muffler? Or just get bare OS 1.60 with out muffler and look for after market tune pipes. I’m putting this one on my OMP EDGE 80’ proflie that my wife got me for x-max. |

Flyer95 is right, the YS is lighter. Excuse my error in earlier post. YS 1.40 is 890 g, OS 1.60 is 930 g (without muffler).
As long as you're putting it on a profile, use the stock muffler for the OS. It does not have as cool of a sound as the pitts type, but will fit your plane well, and it is supposed to have better performance than the aftermarket can type (pitts) mufflers. They tend to sound like a 2- stroke dirt bike. |
RE: YS 1.40 Vs OS 1.60 Who got Power
I have both and there are so many pros & cons to both it is hard to pick a winner. If you want cheap, realiable power go OS, but man it is hard to beat the sound and throttle transition of the YS. It's a toss up, to me it would depend on the plane.

RE: YS 1.40 Vs OS 1.60 Who got Power
I prefer the YS 140 FZ engine because it will burn even the last drop of fuel!Have in mind this!
YS engines don't have any problems of your flying moves! |

ORIGINAL: ʯstas I prefer the YS 140 FZ engine because it will burn even the last drop of fuel!Have in mind this! YS engines don't have any problems of your flying moves! My OS has a Perry pump and is just as good at drawing fuel as my 140FZ. |
RE: YS 1.40 Vs OS 1.60 Who got Power
Υes but the total system with your pump is much heavier than the YS 140FZ!;)

RE: YS 1.40 Vs OS 1.60 Who got Power
ORIGINAL: ʯstas Υes but the total system with your pump is much heavier than the YS 140FZ!;) I have weighed the OS but never the YS system. actually my YS SYSTEM would be heavier than the OS SYSTEM. My YS is in a pattern plane with a Hyde mount, nose ring & Hatori header & pipe. I am sure that if I put a Slimline pitts on the YS and mounted on a Dubro mount the difference in weight would only be a few ozs. I don't know what I am argueing about anyway, I have both engines, I like both engines and as I say the type of plane I am using would dictate which one I use. I'm still saying it's a toss up. ;););) |

Or just get bare OS 1.60 with out muffler and look for after market tune pipes. I’m putting this one on my OMP EDGE 80’ proflie that my wife got me for x-max. I have the same OMP Edge 80' Profile ARF, and the rail width is perfect for the OS 160. I earlier tried to mount my YS 140 DZ on there, but the spacing is too wide for my YS such that the engine mounting holes line up with the beam edge. I have scratched the idea of outfitting my YS 140 for that plane, and decided to put a Moki 180 on there, which is a little too big to fit, but a little trimming has solved that problem. As for power, OS 160 FX w/ BCM Pitts muffler & 5% nitro swings APC 18x6W @ 9100 rpm, Pro-Zinger 18x8 @ 8500 rpm. I think with OMP MCP the OS 160 will swing 18x6W @ over 10k. YS 140 DZ w/ 30% nitro & PSPEC muffler swings APC 18x6W @ 9500 rpm, Pro-Zinger 18x8 @ 8500 rpm Mind you, this is the expensive YS DZ, not the less expensive YS 140 Sport. I think the peak power of YS 140 Sport is about the same as OS 160 with normal muffler. The distinct difference for YS is not in peak power, but in midrange and transition. You will find OS 160 w/ a heavy APC 18x6W prop will spool up with noticeable lag. Also, OS 160 at 1/4 to 1/3 throttle rings a bit, not very steady. I hope the OMP MCP solves this problem. |
RE: YS 1.40 Vs OS 1.60 Who got Power
Weight difference between the 2 packages are:
YS 140 = 34 oz, muffler = 2 ~3 oz OS 160 = 32 oz, MCP = 6~8 oz When push comes to shove, let me tell you, unless you want to re-engineer the front engine mount beam for the narrower YS 140, you should go with OS 160, and get the MCP. Total cost is still less than YS 140 Sport. |

I have just tested on of those OMP Sport pipes and the one I had was not what they claimed. 1) It was very, very loud --especially at idle 2)Spool was better with APC 18x6 but top RPM's only gained 300rpm(from bission pitts)--Brought RPM up to open face. --looks like the pipe is tuned for about 7000rpm (very long tuned length) so it makes sense that transition would be much improved. I am going to try the FAI macs Pipe next. Hope to swing a 19x7 Skorepa into the mid 8's with it on an 11 pound Giles. |
