I'm planning on building a Sig 1/5th scale J3 Cub and am looking for help selecting a 4 stroke engine. My choices are: Saito .91 ($204), Saito 100 ($259), YS .63 ($238) and OS .91 ($238). This will be my first 4 cyl. My flying site is located at 5,000' elevation. I would like to set the Cub up with floats for snow flying.
Which one would be my best choice, or are there better options? Thanks for your help! |
Choices
I have a Saito .91 and a 100, I originally bought the .91 to put on a Kellett AutoGyro, then Saito came out with the 100 which I couldn't stand not having. The Kellett needs a very large diameter prop because of its dummy radial engine, plus it requires about 8 lbs. of thrust to fly it. The .91 turns an 18x5 at 8,800 rpm and the 100 turns the same prop at 9,200 and the 100 runs much smoother than the .91. I would think that anything approaching a scale sized prop for your plane would eliminate the YS .63 and I've never tried the 18x5 on my YS .91FZ. I don't think the YS .91 would be happy working that hard. I'll have to try it.

Go with the Saito 100. May get a good deal off ebay also. I am also at 5000ft and you lose about 17% of your rated powerup here, along with speed and the rest of it. Example. Those of us getting 125mph out of an F20 here is great but those at sea level with the same set up are going around 150mph.
