Pump on side-mounted engine?
 

I have an engine that is side-mounted and want to install a Perry VP-20 Oscillating pump.

I can't mount the pump to the backplate because the engine is mounted sideways. I thought the pump had to be mounted horizontal?

How do I set it all up?

I first saw your picture and thought the servo was the pump, and then I saw the wires and noticed it was the servo.

Normally, the pump would be mounted just like you have your servo. But you may still be able to put it on the back plate.

I am unsure about how to mount the pump.

I don't know if the little bouncy ball will work if mounted so that it moves up and down. Or does it need to bounce back and forth on a horizontal axis?

If mounted on a horizontal axis, and I go into knifeedge with this plane- does the pump quit working?

I do not see the pump in your picture only a servo However the VP-20 does not have to be mounted horizontal but it must not be inline with the crankshaft, To function it must be perpendicular to the crankshaft so the high frequency torsional vibration can propel the osscillator ball. The Varsane instuctions even illustrate it mounted as one of the possible ways just as your engine is mounted with the backplate mount and the pump vertical under the crankcase.

Also do use the backplate mount as mounting on the firewall or even aft on the enginemount itself will result in depleted pump performance.

You are correct; I haven't got the pump mounted yet.

I will mount it on the two lower (left-side) bolts of the engine backplate.

W8ye sent me some PM's and helped me out a bunch.

I got the pump from a guy at that big auction house (*-Bay). It's still in the mail somewhere, so I haven't gotten a look at the instructions yet.

I had to mount the servo on the firewall for balance. You should see this pig of a plane. It's a H9 Cap 232 25%. It was rediculously tailheavy. I got 2 battery packs and two elevator servos under my fuel tank. I got my reciever in there too. But, when it was all done, I didn't have to add any weight for balance.

The pump will probably make a tiny difference in the balance, but I'm dead-on level now anyways. Shouldn't be a big deal.

Just put one of mine on the balance scale with the factory mount (which is intended for 40/60 engines by the way) and it shows one and a quarter ounce.
