Thin Wall Plug Wrench
 

I acquired a Saito FA-182T and want to replace all four plugs. The problem is, the front plugs have very little clearance from the fins and valves so I need to purchase a thin walled long reach glow plug driver. Looking at Tower and Horizon, it's hard to tell if any of their drivers are thin walled.

What driver do others use to change the plugs in the FA-182T or do you know what drivers are thin?

Go to an electronics shop, get a "Spintite" in 5/16" size. Or find a Snap-On tools truck, get a 5/16" socket in 1/4" drive and a screwdriver handle to drive it.

Or, just buy any old glow plug socket wrench and grind it so it has thinner walls.

Thank you for the quick replies. Bill: Tried the spintite, but the wall is still too thick. Kmot: You're right, looks like I'll have to sacrifice a socket.

I don't know what brand of "Spintite" you have, I have the "Real" one made by Stevens-Walden, it works. I also have the X-Cellite brand copy, it works as well.

The thin wall is why I specifically said Snap-On for the socket, I have one and it works fine too.

Thanks Bill. My set is an old Xcelite set. Maybe I have copies of copies of copies. :) At any rate, I wasn't sure if there was a specific tool I was missing or I need to make my own. No problem either way, and thank you for taking the time to respond.

My next step will be to tune the engine as you describe in another thread.

The Fox 4-way wrench is thin walled and the only one I have found that will fit in the water cooled head on a K&B 3.5 engine. It also fits any other tight fit plug holes. It is a little spendy at $12 and is designed to only fit US sizes of nuts.

A 5/16" nut driver from the hardware store, ground down if necessary
will do the job. ;)

I use the Fox that Paul suggested, it works on all my engines except the Conley and ABITAR 1.20s. On them I knock the Fox wrench apart and put a bar through a hole I drilled in the end opposite the 5/16 end. The OHC towers are too tall to reach with the Fox wrench assembled and nut drivers are too fat.
