Evolution Owners plz read!!!!!

About a month ago i purchased an evolution 1.00 nx. mounted it on an airplane and tried to get it to run right. first i took off the factory limiters and this helped but i still had a severe dead stick problem when i flew the the plane under half throttle for a bit then tried to throttle up. just about every time it would just quit

after a good bit of reading on rcu about this engine i tried some of the things that others had tried. 1st was a brand new O.S. #8 glow plug... i noticed a bit of improvement but it did not fix it.....tried a new four stroke glow plug with no change... replaced all the feul line with bigger I.D. line with no change..... the last thing i did was use a higher content nitro fuel wich had no results

this sunday was when i tried all of this stuff at the feild... i was flying with 3 old timers that had a combined experiance of about 80 years flying rc aircraft..... none of thses guys could tune the bugs outa this engine

monday i called horizon about my problem,,, they said that they have never heard of this before and told me to send the engine back to them....well i guess they dont read posts at rcu because just about every one is having the same trouble with this engine.

one of the guys kept saying that he thought the engine was lean through the midrange and was just dying from lack of fuel...he also told me about ten times to check the o-ring under thr carb for proper seal.... all i did was argue with him and try something else because it was a new engine and there was no way that o-ring was bad.....well after all this i flew nine times and only landed under power once.

well that night it started to gnaw on me about the o-ring idea so it removed the cowl and then took the carb off the engine..... well i could not beleive what i found........NO O-RING. pissed me off to no end.... this thing was brand new when i got it....must have been friday at the factory when mine was built

i put an o-ring in it and flew this morning...and after i leaned out bottom end a bit i flew ten times with no trouble what so ever

check under your carbs guys..... because some dumb@$^&*$$#^$^*(( didnt put an o-ring in mine

hope this helps any one still havin trouble

the manual shows an exploded veiw of the engine and carb. it clearly shows two things under the carb... one is a meatal ring that resembles a thin walled washer and an o-ring. the o-ring on mine was not there.

i just went the the auto parts store and asked to look at there o-ring assortment. found one just a hair bigger than the carb barrell and put it in...... the metal washer first then the o-ring . i also pushed in on the carb to seat it while i tightened the carb screw

i immediatly knew i had found somthing when i tried to start it for the first time afterwards....it was so rich it wouldnt even run

then had to lean it out......... no air leak any more...................hope this helps.................cantw8tofly

I had the same problem with th evo 1.00 constantly dead-sticking. Took it back to the lhs and we also noted that the o-ring was missing. The engine was replaced and problem seems to be solved. ?Quality control?

umlas... did you fix the one you had or did they give you another?..............and if they gave you another engine did you check for an o-ring?

just curious........................................... .....cantw8tofly

The second engine had the o-ring. The LHS allowed me to return the first engine. Interestingly, on the shelf one other engine was also lacking the o-ring.

Interesting. I have an Evo .40 and a .61 and have never had a lick of trouble with either. the .40 was on my Arrow 40 trainer and in 3 years i have never touched anything. I just replaced the glow plug every year and go. It is the most reliable engine i have owned. I however have only been flying for 3 years so i don't have a lot of experience with other engines and as long as my Evo's run well i probably won't ever get any. Maybe for some reason this is just an issue with the 1.00 If i ever get one i will for sure watch for that.

I have another question a little off the subject. I bought the H9 P-51 PTS and upon recieving it I put the motor on a run in stand although it isn't neccesary. Almost immediately It was making a very un-nerving knocking sound. I've run alot of different type motors including offroad race motors and this was new to me. So I called Horizon to see if they had any answers and they said to run it awhile and see what happens. Well after a gallon there was no change so I bought a .46nt and put it on the stand. It ran fine with no problems. Now I've got about 4 gallons (flight time) on it and it is making the same noise as the original motor was and is progressively getting worse. It is most noticable when just above idle. If you blip the throttle it will do it briefly each time and if you hold it just above idle it will do it constantly. Has anyone heard this before or is it just my luck to get 2 motors with the same problem? lol

Thanks Shane

the only time i ever heard any thing like that is when the crankshaft was moving back and fourth and allowing the prop hub to hit the case............it was on an O.S. 40 fp and i found that there was a small thin washer called a thrust washer that was missing

i found it did it only at an idle because when you throttle up the prop pulls the crankshaft out just enough so the hub clears the engine case

this was a bushing engine tho and i dont know if a ball bearing engine would do the same. but it might not hurt to look

yeah thrust washer is in place, I actually forgot to put it on with my first Evo motor and it won't turn over after the prop is tightened. The flywheel hits the case. It has over 100 flights on it and it just started doing it about maybe 20 flights ago. Gonna tear it down and see what I can find out. Very strange though indeed. Maybe I'll try shimming it too see if that helps, I am using 30% nitro as I do in all my motors that allow it and some require it with the higher nitro content. We'll see

RE: Evolution Owners plz read!!!!!

wow......30% nitro . i dont use anything more than 15% in mine and that is uncommon. i use 10% mostly

well the only other thing i can think of would be slop in the conecting rod??? tear it apart and check the crank jurnal bushing and the wrist pin?

I run all my engines really hard and have not had any major mechanical trouble with any. i have put bearings in a few but thats it

let me know what you find.............................................. ............cantw8tofly

Could the knocking sound that you are hearing possibly be detonation? Too much nitro will cause detonation...

RE: Evolution Owners plz read!!!!!

Could be detonation, I will check to see if the piston is pitted when I take it apart tonight. It runs great other than that. Going to add a shim just to be sure and will try it again this weekend.
