Fox Engine Advice Needed
 

Hey,

I may be splitting hairs but I have a hanger 9 P-51d ARF and 2 new-to-me Fox engines I can hang on it:

1.) Fox .74 Eagle IV

2.) Fox .78 without a muffler


The .78
-Seems to be older due to the earlier Carb
-Has a valve door connected to the throttle
-non-standard holes for the muffler to attach (on the top and bottom instead of the left and right).
-What muffler would be better? A strap-on or Factory

The Eagle has
- A different type carb with 2 needles, one on each side


Basically my question is: Is one of these known to be better than the other? I have NO experience with Fox engines and would appreciate any tips you have to offer.

The Eagle .74 will be by far the better engine, use a Fox Miracle plug, 5% nitro and a 12x8 prop, although a 13x6 will work too and look better. Hopefully it is the ringed version.

I've had a few of the 74's and I loved every one of them. If you ever need to pull up a tree stump, the 74 will do it. I currently have 2 waiting for planes.

Note: If the 74 is ringed it will never let you down but if it's ABC then return it to Fox and have it changed to the ringed version. Fox had some technical problems w/ the ABC version.

My vote is for the 74 - hang on! :eek:

See if you can swap the .78 to a collector for another ringed .74.

If you do decide to run the .78, adjust the high speed needle to 1.5 turns open. Then adjust the low speed needle until the engine idles perfectly. Only after you have obtained a good idle can you adjust the high speed needle with the butterfly equipped carb. Good luck.

The .74 adjusts like every other modern two needle carb.

Fox 78s
 

Hi Mad, I'm mad for 78s, got a few. Nicely made engine. Read "Fliteline Solutions's" write up on the two needle Fox carbs. Not a problem if you set the low speed first, then the high speed.

When you have some older technology (older is such a relative term), it's worth the respect it deserves based on the state of the art at the time.

What I'd be really interested in is hearing from someone who has run the early 78s and 74s (and the early 60s for that matter) with the tripple jet carb. ANYONE GOT SOME EXPERIENCE WITH THESE?

Can't help you with the newer 74s. From waht guys say, they're pretty darn good if you know the taps.
