Which engine would you buy?

If given a choice, which of these three engines would you prefer most, O.S. .91 FX, O.S. FS-91 II Surpass or a YS FZ 91 4-C?
(I know it's a little vague, and it's probably not fair to compare the three but what the heck.) RCUniverse is without a doubt, The Ultimate RC Forum!

I'll qualify my preference (YS) with if I'm weight-sensitive, I'd go with the 91FX (or a Saito 91 or 100). Most planes I'm building these days have long tails and generally need mass on the nose, so YS is my preference if the plane can gracefully take the weight.

Are we looking at apples and oranges here?

Four-stroke: 1) O.S.
2) SAITO

Two-stroke: 1) MOKI
2) O.S.

YS without a doubt. Its got the power of a 1.20.

Dugster 01-31-2002 03:06 PM

None of the above

I'll be purchasing a Magnum 91 FS in the next couple of weeks for my new 4 Star 60. From reports I've read and fellows at the field all say this paticular model Magnum engine is an excelent performer. Can't seem to justify the extra $80 just for the O.S. name.

Of course I'll be using an O.S. glow plug in it. :D

Try to qualify your criteria.

If money is no object: YS FZ91.

If money is an object: none (TT, Magnum or ASP are much better buys, 2c or 4c)

If given as a contest winner freebie: O.S. FS-91 II Surpass (the OS is easier to live with than the YS, which wants 20%+ nitro)

Fully blown 426 Hemi of course. But if I need a light weight engine for 3D I would settle for a fully blown alluminum block Chevy!

wood 01-31-2002 05:39 PM

engine?

I'll take a alcohol injected stroked 400 chevy small block for my 82 S-10 project, but for my goldberg chipmunk I think an YS-91 FZ.....

WOOD :D

Blackbird-RCU 01-31-2002 08:17 PM

I'll take a healthy 327 chevy small block

Hey everybody thanks for replying to my post. Sorry if it is a little vague, and I know it like comparing apples to oranges. Let me put another way. If you were stranded on a deserted island and could only have one of these three engines O.S. .91 FX, .O.S. FS-91 II Surpass or a YS FZ 91 4-C, Which one would you choose?

Nice try, but still need to specify the natives' level of friendliness.

If a bunch of headhunting cannibals, I'll take all three, convert them to watercooled, strap 'em onto the backend of a makeshift raft, and get da heck outa there before I become the Saturday communal soup.

If the locals are bunch of friendly RCers, I'll take the YS91, give it to them as a gift, and promise to look after their beautiful daughters while they're at the field marveling at the YS's 1.20-like power.

Hey Volfy, nice reply! a little humor and imagination never hurts. Rock on!.....

Hobbsy 01-31-2002 11:56 PM

Why

I'd spend the extra five bucks for the Saito every time. I already have.

My choice out of the three is , the Saito 100..........Bud

If I was stranded I would have to pick the OS 91 FX. I love my YS engines but the two stroke has less parts to go wrong and no valves to set.

Valves?? You are supposed to check the valves??? Why they never seem to move on mine. Checked last spring, checked in the fall, yep still 2 thou :) I will check them again in August.

HUH ?????????

Engines of similar power levels:
(YS FZ91
The YS FZ91 easily turns the APC 14x10 with moderate (20%) nitro. This engine was upgraded from the proven design of the earlier YS 91AC with some new carburetion.

Our Price: $274.16 :D

You know, for some reason, every time I post something about the YS, I always catch flak from guys selling YS. You YS dealers seem to be a touchy bunch. Now why is that? :p I don't want to argue with y'all. I've shopped the net far and wide and I know what I can buy each the major brands for. Besides Enya, YS is consistently more expensive than the others.

It's good that you sell YS at a good price. Now relax and have some fun with the rest of us, will ya?

Yes, back to the subject, please. I believe this point of this thread is to post your OWN choices - not to criticize others'. I like this one, you like that one. Is that so hard to understand?

Boy am I sorry I got dragged through the mud. Twenty people posted their opinions, and I got picked out of the crowd. And I've been saying nice things about the YS, too. Sheesh!

A lhs in the Lafayette, In. area is selling the 100 for $255 and the 72 for $200.

Whyes........your spending to much time on the internet.......get your butt in the garage and do those tests we are all waiting for!! ;) ......
before you go though, tell me what you think of the ys 120fz in that 60/90 edge.....all the guys at the field are saying that when you get to 8.5 lb it's time to go to the 120fz......it's only a little heavier than the 91fz ...right??

Look at it in a different light. A lot of the newest 2M pattern ships are coming in at 9lbs, some guys are getting them as light as 8.8 lbs, and we put the 140L, 140DZ, OS 140RX and EFI in them. So is it overkill to put a 120 on 8.5lbs, I think not. Key is weight if your plane is light for its wing area, go for it. If you are already borderline of being way too damn heavy time to take a little off the airframe and then go for it :) Side note, the 140L and FZ are the same weight as the 120FZ and I have seen the L sell used (rebuilt but used) for as little as $300 US on the pattern list (yep 300 US), shoot, for the same weight and ungodly more horsepower that is what you need :) Now an L on 8.5lbs that would be a sight to see :) My pattern ship is 9.6lbs and goes up like the Space Shuttle with an L, so I am putting the DZ on it LOL.

Outssider, I don't have the FZ120, but probably will very soon. I have a Lanier 1/4-scale Laser 200 with a YS FZ91 that came out at 9.5lbs. The 91 hauls it around fine with an APC 14x8 but I spend most of the time at full throttle and vertical falls off after a couple hundred feet. I know I can put a 15x7 on it and get better vertical, but I want the speed of an 8 (or even 10) pitch prop. When I bought the 91, I was expecting the plane to be more in the 8lb range, but it was not to be (long story).

I'm seriously thinking about getting a YS FZ120 for this plane and putting the 91 in a Boxer 90 I'm currently building (which should truly come out at 8lbs or less). There's ~4oz difference in weight which I can compensate for in the Laser by moving the battery pack aft.

The thought of putting a ys 140 or saito 180 in this particular edge is something even I would not consider. The 120 fz is a stretch  the 140 would .....I'm afraid.... tear it apart :stupid:
