Tower 75?
Anybody have any experience with the Tower .75?
I want to put it in a Stingray 40 with a smoke kit from MACS. I figure I need the extra power for the weight of the system. Thanks... |
Tower 75?
From personal experience. The Tower 75 is on a par with the MDS 78. Neither one of the two equals a fair running OS 61SF.

Tower 75?
I have a tower 75 I'm breaking in as we speak. I don't have an MDS 78 and have never heard of a os 61sf. The tower 75 has more displacement, horsepower, and torque than the OS61FX, but the OS61FX does weigh more and costs only 45% more. I must warn you about breaking in the tower 75 on a bench though. It tries to make a wing out of my black and decker workmate surface, so you might want to consider concreting something down in the backyard. I doubt you would have that problem with any 61. Cheers! ;)

The OS 61SF is an older version of the OS 61FX. The last of the 61SFs' ended about 1997. The price for one then was about $135.00. They were not cheap, but they were better than anything currently on todays market in the same class. (in my opinion)
While you are breaking in your Tower 75, keep in mind that it is a ringed engine, not an ABC engine. Do not get it hot!! You heat up an ABC engine for break in, and just run lots of fuel in a ringed engine at a rich and cool setting to do the same. It will not be completely broken in until it has at least 3/4 of a gallon of fuel through it. In any case, don't get me wrong. Both the Tower and the MDS are good engines fro their intended purpose. Sport flying. Silversurfer |

Thanks, surfer, for that warning. However, I don't have that ringed, sport-flying, Tower .75 that you speak of. I have the high performance Tower .75 BB ABC CNC machined model that cost less than $100 (american) and comes with a 4 year warranty. You know, the one with the stock tuned muffler and remote needle valve with a top end of 17,000 rpm and 2.25 bhp. The one driscoll was asking about at the beginning of this thread. Cheers.

Tower 75?
I helped a neighbor break in his Santa delivered TH 75 mounted on a GP U Can Do 3D this past weekend and I have to say Whoooa Nellie!
The topic of you get what you pay for is 'sacred ground' but from my initial experience with this engine my thoughts are VALUE! This is a CNC milled piece of machinery that has quality written all over it..... After a long painful deliberation on engine selection, (OS 50SX, OS 46FX, Jett 50, YS 45) I will be ordering the TH 46 for my new Patriot kit. It might not be able to keep up with the Jett's at the field but for a sizable margin less than half the price I'm willing to take the gamble plus or minus a few mph.....? Just my humble opinion, but I believe these engines, if given the opportunity will suprise some of the brand loyal hobbyists like myself! No....I don't work for Tower |
Tower 75?
Driscoll,
Santa brought me the same engine this year and I can barely turn it over with the prop. Gets VERY tight at top of piston throw. Did yours do the same thing? I've been told this is normal, howewver, mine is so thight, I'm wondering if I'll be able to start it. Have not started it up yet and am looking forward to doing so. ED |

Ed
The tightness you feel at the top of the stroke is perfectly normal. You should have no problem starting the engine with an electric starter....hang on this baby has some power! AOA |
Tower 75?
Thanks AOA,
Does "AOA" stand for "Angle Of Attack"? (Military Pilots' term) ED |

You got it.....not just a military term.....good luck with your new engine, I think you are going to like it. AOA |
Tower 75?
Ed, I am new to rc and got the TH .75. When I got it out of the box, the first thing I did was to check the compression. WOW! That thing was tighter than a nun's...um well you get the picture. I thought that it was defective and that it couldn't possibly be right. I have only put about 6-8 tanks through it so far, but have to say I am pleased. It is a little fussy right out of the box. Luckily I have a few friends that have been flying for years and I think we now have it just about dialed in. The thing really is a powerhouse. I'm sure the OS's idle better and what not, but for the money, I think it's great. Wish I had more info for you but lately the weather, work, and family have conspired against me!

Tower Hobbies 75
Hi Guys-
I put a Tower 75 with a 12X8 nylon Master airscrew in a 7-1/2 lb. Lanier Stinger 60 ARF and all I can say is WOW!Everyone told me to go with a 91 FX,and,in my opinion,I don't need any more power than this little baby has!She delivers enough to fly in about 6 feet off the ground, point her straight up wide open, and within 8 seconds has the 5 foot wingspan stinger looking like a dot.I would definately buy another! This engine gets a bad rap once in awhile for some reason-I wonder if it is just because it's under a hundred bucks?? Tower .75....A Powerhouse....
You can remove that cap from the side of the carb,
and take the guts out of the remote needle, and put them up front....If you like. ( I liked ) :D |
Tower 75 - 61
I have a Tower 61 that I used exclusively last season in my Slowpoke 40 Sport(it was not slow). THe engine was very reliable I regularly added extra weight to my slowpoke for parachute drops and aerial photography. I had a great time with it. Unfortunatley, after about I'd say 100 hours of flight time, the carberator barrel stuck 1/2 OPEN and I bent the plastic nyrod trying to get the plane to respond. Once I got throttle control again the nyrod was shorter(bent) and would only get the throttle back to about 1/3, which was way to much to land.
SOOO I flew around until the fuel ran out and dead stick landed. A very nerve racking experience and lucky. I didn't figure out what happened until days later when I started takeing the carb apart and the pieces fell together. The vibrations and movement of the carb barrel had worn a pocket into the side of the channel that's cut into the carb barrel(full throttle, my most frequent position), when I tried to decrease throttle and move out of this ever increasing groove the nyrod bent. SO bottom line, the carb barrel is aluminum and it WEARS OUT, since the screw that guides it are steel. Tower sent me a new parts at no cost, but I complained a little. The carb neck is the same diameter as a Super Tiger 60 carb(all steel) I have, I may try that in my next plane. I think you'll be satisfied, I know I was, for the price. Kevin K. :p |

I had the exact same thing happen to me with my Tower .61. I didn't have nearly 100 hours on it though. I was flying around just fine, and then suddenly I realized the throttle was stuck at half throttle. I ran the plane out of fuel, and when I got it down, I realized the carburetor was frozen up. I took the carburetor off and drenched it with after-run oil. This allowed me to move it, so I put it back together, and haven't had a problem since. I've probably got 200 flights on the engine since then, but that was a weird experience. I never did figure out why it happened, as I didn't see any groove on it, like you did. By the way, the engine was not new when this happened either. It was on it's second plane, in fact. The main issue I have with the Tower .61 is that I couldn't find a muffler extension for it anywhere. I had to stick that huge muffler out of the top of a Giles 202 because I couldn't find a muffler extension to make it clear the fuselage in the bottom. I've never seen a header for this engine either, but maybe I'm just looking in the wrong places. -bsc |
Tower 75?
Your probably right, I exaggerated the hours, but it was probably about 100 flights.
It is worth checking every winter becasue the aluminum will wear against the steel. Your muffler extension is interesting, I searched the catalogs as well. I played with home made mufflers from brass drain pipe and tubing, but my soldering techniques stunk and the joints fell apart after the engine heated up. I used silver solder with a MAPP gas torch. Someday I may try Brazing rod if I find a source and read about technique. I've stopped trying, for now. The benchtest was bordering dangerous with a rotating prop and pieces of warm brass falling off the muffler. |
tower 75
To all that are happy with their Tower 75. How is the throttle response? What is the lowest idle on what prop, what fuel?
Can you let it idle for 5 minutes and can you crack the throttle open and get clean instant transition, with no smoke, spitting or hesitation? Need to replace a Fox .74 which will not throttle well stock or with an Enya three needle carb. |
