4C plugs
I have been running my os fl 70 on the normal OS F plug. My idle is alright but i just can't get it reliable below 2400. I looked on the os website and noticed that the type f glowplug is not a very hot plug. Would a hoter plug help idle? What other 4c plugs are there that i can experiment with?

RE: 4C plugs
Most of the popular 4 cycle plugs are very close to same as the OS "F"
These would be the H-9 Super Plug Four stroke, The Saito "SS", and the Y-S four stroke plug. Try an Enya #3 two cycle plug? |
RE: 4C plugs
how about the cox miracle plug?
|
RE: 4C plugs
The Fox Miracle plug is just a little cooler than a OS "F"

RE: 4C plugs
I don't know what you are running for a prop but a big heavy prop will help your idle such as an APC or Master Airscrew 13/6 or maybe a 13/7. You might want to use the fuel the carb was calabrated for at the factory with which is 20% oil and 15% nitro. This might help due limited adjustments of that carb. The OS F plug is the standard of the industry and because four strokes go through very few of them, I can't see much reason to use anything else.

RE: 4C plugs
Running an apc 13-4. Idled best on 13-6 but 13-4 does better 3d. I might just try an apc 14-4. I am getting 10,500 on the 13-4. I am not sure how well it will transition with an apc 14-4. Slight lag from idle to full throttle. 1/4 and above to full is istant acceleration.

RE: 4C plugs
Trying a 14/4 sounds like a good idea to me. I like to keep that size 4 stroke between 9 and 10 thousand RPM ready to fly. What fuel are you running?
|
RE: 4C plugs
30% heli fuel, so far it has run the best on it.
|
RE: 4C plugs
just baught a new type f plug (only have one that is operational) and a apc 14-4 prop.
I have gone through a few posts and there have been a very diverse opinion about my engine and a apc 14-4. I am just going to try and see how it goes. I guese i will be one of the firsts to do this on this engine so i will post some numbers when i get it. |
RE: 4C plugs
If you are still running your first plug in that engine, then it is quite possible that the break in process of your engine ruined it... just installing a new one may be the end of your problems.
I still think the OS "F" is just about the best you can get for a 4-stroke. |
RE: 4C plugs
Its actually 1 of 3 but i think pretty much all of them got ruinged from a long break in and my inexperience at the time. Luckily the engine is still alive and well :D. We will see how the 14-4 performs

RE: 4C plugs
There is a new four stroke glow plug in town. Maybe one to consider?

RE: 4C plugs
ORIGINAL: w8ye Most of the popular 4 cycle plugs are very close to same as the OS "F" These would be the H-9 Super Plug Four stroke, The Saito "SS", and the Y-S four stroke plug. Try an Enya #3 two cycle plug? ------------- I was going to suggest the same thing. Engines are funny when it comes to glow plugs and do not always run as predicted within given heat ranges. I attribute this to combustion chamber shape, the individual characteristics of the engine being tested, the handler's characteristics, fuel, prop, etc. I would not expect an engine with an air bleed carb to idle as low and steadily as a two needle carb (depending upon the two needle carb), but I wouldn't rule it out either. Try different glow plugs. The Fox Miracle plug would be an inexpensive plug to try, as would the Thunderbolt, K&B and McCoy plus. I used Enya #3 and McCoy four-stroke plugs in my Enya 80-4C with great success. At that time, I had not stumbled upon the OS Type-F plug. I'll bet that would have been great too. I have two used Enya 80-4C engines now, so, once bathed in antifreeze and re-ringed and re-bearinged, I'll get a chance to try the OS Type-F plug in one of them. By the way, if someone has a used Enya 80-4C in running condition with zero defects, I would be willing to trade a NIB Magnum .91 for it, straight up. Ed Cregger |
RE: 4C plugs
Hi Kmot,
That Thunderbolt plug looks very much like a Saito plug to me? What's anyone else think? |
RE: 4C plugs
Nope, the latest Saito SS plug looks very much like an OS-f.
|
RE: 4C plugs
But how about a P-1 or P-2?
|
RE: 4C plugs
OS F all the way!
Wouldn't bother with anything else myself! |
RE: 4C plugs
Just realized the hub for the apc 14-4 is wider than the shaft of my os fl 70. Has gone from 1/4 to 5/16 of an inch thick. Will have to get a little creative to find something to fit between the hub and the drive shaft.
I am anxious to finally see how this engine performs with the apc 14-4. I will also have to get a little creative to get the spinner to fit the prop i have. Already had to cut some off the spinner away to get my apc 13-4 prop in. Hopefully the with of the apc 13-4 is not to much smaller than the 14-4 I am curious as to how you guys balance spinners to, don't want my spinner to be way unbalanced |
RE: 4C plugs
Use this thing to balance your props and spinners.

RE: 4C plugs
Fox has come out with a 4-cycle plug that i saw at Toledo it has more coils than their miracle plug. I ended up buying a card of 12 while i was there. Just haven't gotten around to trying them yet. Sooner or later i'll burn up a plug in one of my four strokes and then i'll get a chance to try one.

Dennis
Can you post a pic of the new Fox plug? What is it called? I'm curious fiery |
RE: 4C plugs
I can not find the new four stroke plug on their site? All I see is the Miracle.
|
RE: 4C plugs
I got the TF balancer but there is no way to balance a spinner because the balancing shaft is blocked by the cone. Basically i can't completly insert the spinner.
|
RE: 4C plugs
You are correct. You cannot balance a spinner on the Top Flite balancer
You need a Dubro or a High Point Balancer. You lower the front wheel stand and raise the rear one. The Arbor goes on top of the front wheels and under the rear wheels. The spinner assembly is put on the end of the arbor spindle rod out in front of the balancer PS.... I must add that you have to put one of the wheel stands up into the middle of the balancer body. |
RE: 4C plugs
They should sell props and spinners prebalanced. I'm not paying for a kit.
