Como Engines

I thought I posted this a coupleof days ago, but I can't find it. Guess I'm losing it. Anyway, a little over a year ago I bought quite a large collection of RC equipment from a gentleman no longer interested in RC. Among that batch of things was a fairly decent Kadet Senior with a Como engine hung on the front of it. About a week ago, I got the airplane down and looked it over and decided to see if the engine would start/run. Felt like good compression with smooth bearings, so I put fuel in it. Opened the carb and rotated the prop through a couple revolutions. It drew fuel immediately. So I attached a glow battery to it and back flipped it, I believe three times. It started, no coughing or sputtering or blubbering of any kind. It just started and ran. Surprised the heck out of me. So I let it warm a few minutes then started blipping the throttle. Seemed to respond immediately and transition well. After a few minutes of that madness, I decided to see how far I could advance the throttle, very slowly, and keep it running. It advanced well up to about 3/4 throttle, then it just quit. Again, no blubbering or sputtering--it just quit. Turned the receiver and the transmitter off and have not fooled with it again. All in all, it impressed me very well. My questions are concerning sizes available in these things and any tips anyone has on them. I can read "Como" on the port side of the engine, but see no size. I'm not really interested in removing it from the airplane just to see if a size is marked somewhere on it. It is clearly in the .40 size range, but what sizes are available?--.35, .40, .46, something else? Also any tips anyone has on these engines would be appreciated. The carb is certainly interesting with needles on both sides of it. I assume the one on the exhaust side is low speed and the other is high speed, but I have not moved either of them at this point. Anyone familiar with these engines?

RE: Como Engines

The comos were Super Tigers from about 20 years ago.

The engine you have is just like a Super Tiger S40.

If you want a new engine like yours try a Super Tiger GS40. They are only $49.95 from Tower

Your HS speed needle valve needs to be opened 3 or 4 clicks

I owned 2 Como's a 40 and a 51. They were sweet running engines. The engine was imported by INDY RC.

Yup, I bought a Como .40 years ago, I am guessing late '70's to early '80's. Still have it, very low time on the engine. Originally in a Falcon 56 but it dorked on the first flight due to a linkage failure. Not sure if I still have the carb though, at one point I machined a venturi for it for C/L use.

It's a Perry carb isn't it? Can't remember. In any case, as W8YE said you gotta richen up the top end, it's getting progressively leaner as you open the throttle.

MJD, no, it's not like any Perry carb I am familiar with (I have several). This carb is barrel shaped with needles poking out of both ends. It is very large physically to be on a .40 size engine. Could take pics and post them if anyone is interested.

RE: Como Engines

To my knowledge, all the Comos I've seen had Perry's but there no reason why they could not have a Super Tiger carb.

Your description of the carb sounds like the Super Tiger carb of 20 years ago.

RE: Como Engines

In addition, Comos were made in sizes that STs were not, like the venerable .29. They were just as strong and user-friendly as the STs.

I think you guys are right. You're taking me full circle here. I have an old Italian made Super Tiger .60 from the late 70's or early 80's. Bought it brand new in the red box with yellow markings if my memory serves me right. Never could get it to run right so I bought a Perry carb for it and it instantly became an actual Super Tiger. I still have the original Super Tiger carb somewhere in the plastic case that the Perry came in. I will find it and see how similar it is to the carb on the Como in question. If this Como is the forerunner to the Super Tiger that I have, it has possibilities of being a real hoss--or tiger.

RE: Como Engines

The size #'s will be faintly stamped just under the muffler flange. Como's did come with ST carbs and if you have a low speed neele sticking out ,the High speed needle came 2 ways. Older version had the bent wire needle with packing nut and the newer old version had the current new style knurled brass needle. These were great carbs and low speed could be set with engine running. I own 4 comos and parts exchange with Super Tigres perfectly. Comos came in round and square head versions.

JollyPopper 08-10-2007 09:12 AM

RE: Como Engines

This must be the older version as it has the bent wire needle with packing nut for high speed adjustment. Low speed is the newer needle configuration with knurled nut and "U" shaped spring steel retainer to keep it from vibrating from its set position. It seems to be a really user friendly carb. The engine overall does not seem to have much time on it. Later today I will remove the muffler to see if I can see any stamping under the mounting flange and to look at the piston as well to see what color it is. This is the round head version of the engine btw.

That's the engine. Only difference is the muffler--mine is a stock muffler

RE: Como Engines

i have the venerable Como 29 and it's one of THE BEST, bar none engines i have! As to the muffler on ur motor,it looks nothing like mine, and i know mine is the original for my motor. My muffler has a stack tube that bolts to the motor.and then the muffler it's self slides onto the round tube protruding out. A small bolt compresses the muffler lip onto to tube, holding it in place. My 29 flew a 6 pound low wing starfire swinging a 10/6 MA prop. I later put it on a combat gremlin with a 9/6 prop and had a blast! I love my little 29 and will never get rid of it! Like everyone els stated, the COMO was built by Super Tiger but for the World Engines company. I have all the paper work, original box and all the specs on it that show Como was lisenced to world engines from super tiger. By the way, most super tiger parts wil fit the Como's.

good flying,

ART

Como is NOT the "forerunner" to the ST. They were manufactured at the same time STs were being produced.

Jollypopper Just a few things on COMO alias Super Tigre. They don't like high nitro so 5-10% is fine. The FOX RC long idle bar plug is perfect and don't use muffler gasket. A little RTV silicone on cleaned flanges is good to go.

That's right. I remember when World Engines sold them both thru Indy RC. Remember the lawsuit?

Jolly: My stock muffler looks like yours in the front, but the rear section tapers down. Sorta like a funnel.

JollyPopper 08-11-2007 04:02 PM

RE: Como Engines

I have an old HP .40 that has a cone shaped rear muffler half. That engine, btw, is a screaming demon. I have no idea if the muffler on this Como is stock or not, but it fits the engine and the engine is impressive on the ground. Remains to be seen how it performs in the air. Does it make any difference how far the prop extends beyond the fuse? This engine has a 10 inch prop and due to the width of the fuse of the Kadet Senior, it only extends about 2 inches beyone the fuse on each side.

Yes and no. But mostly, no.

A spinning prop creates a low pressure area in front of it. That is what moves your plane forward. Not the blast of air.

RE: Como Engines

Jolly Your muffler is stock and the large chamber one. They did make a smaller one that the back half looked like a funnel. Used more for 29-40 size. Make sure to loctite the muffler body screws ( 2 ) Prop selection is a ? till you find engine size. 10x6-40 ,11x5-45, 11x6-51 with the 11x5 being a good match up for a Kadet............The 51 will take the RPM. Tigres like RPM...............

Como?:D

RE: Como Engines

Kmot, that is one of the more interesting concepts I have run across. I'm gonna have to try to get my mind around that one. Is it true of jet engines also? And Speedster, now you've really done it. I did not realize it could be one of three sizes--.40, .45, .51. Now I guess I'm gonna have to get it out of there and find a size on it. Could hold some intriguing possibilities if it's a .51 or even a .45. If it turns out to be a .40, I think the Kadet is all it will want to handle.

Cyclic Hardover: A Como with a Perry carb. Does that make it a Perry Como?

JollyPopper 08-12-2007 12:33 PM

RE: Como Engines

Turns out to be a .51. It is very clearly stamped on a round boss under the CoMo name on the port side of the engine. It is in the crock pot now undergoing a thorough cleaning. Thanks for all the comments, folks.

Kmot 08-12-2007 04:26 PM

RE: Como Engines

Jolly: No, a jet engine is a reaction engine. To confuse matters even more, on some recip engine aircraft, an Aero Commander comes to mind, the exhaust stacks all feed into an "exhaust augmenter" which is a cone shaped device. It helps to not only extract the exhaust gasses faster, but gives IIRC a 10% increase in 'thrust' to the plane because of the exhaust. :)

This is info that was fed to me at A&P school. Could be it is all BS that was being fed to us by the teachers. :D
