Engine test stand extra muffling
I'm looking for ideas for adding additional muffling to engines on a test stand. I want to be able to test the engines in the garage without getting complaints about the noise. Has anyone out there made a setup that works?
I was thinking about using a small car muffler plumbed in some way onto the engine's muffler. The setup would need to be quickly and easily connected to and disconnected from the engine. Any input will be appreciated. I don't want to reinvent the wheel if it's already been done. Thanks, Ric |

I have used a Mac's muffled tuned pipe just stuck on the end of the regular engine muffler. It doesn't have an effect on the engine one way or the other. For smaller engines I use a Davis SoundMaster four stroke muffler the same way.

trash that noise!
run a flexible hose from your engine into a large plastic trash can. put the lid over the hose (LEAVING A GAP between the lid and the can) and VOILA! the best muffler money can buy... :D

Whatever you use, please make sure the exhaust exit is outside your garage. Even our small engines can generate enough exhaust fumes to kill you in an enclosed area.

Muffling
Thanks for the suggestions guys. I think I'll use a variation of the hose and trash can idea. The garage door will be open during the testing :stupid:

Get the biggest hose you can. Back pressure from too small a hose (or too long) will cause the engine to run hot, which defeats your purpose.
