Important help with a Saito 100
Hey guys...I'd really appreciate all input. Right now, it's approximately 2:15am EST. I have Church in the morning, and would like to break-in the engine tomorrow and possibly fly it tomorrow afternoon or COMPLETELY ready to fly for next Saturday. My question is, can I break-in the Saito 100 with an APC 15x4W prop without any ill effects? I mean, as long as the needle's 5 turns out and it turns 4000rpm for 10 minutes shouldn't it be fine? Hobbsy said he used a method of increasing 1000RPM for every run, so 10min's at 4000, 5000, 6000 and 7000RPM's before leaning for peak. Would that be okay with the 15x4W?? Thanks, all help is WAY appreciated!!!!

hey Victor while I cant help with your prop choice I can help with your time management by saying bugger going to church when you have such an important job to get done.Im sure the rev. will understand and if not its time to change religion. Hell (not the right word but ) I missed going to church one day to go flying and the misses got real mad but I can hardly blame her as we were due to get married that day . cheers the pope.

A 14x6 prop will cool the engine a bit better, but this has been discussed in another thread and is inconsequential... A 14x6 would also be a lower load, compared to the 15x4W and this IS important during initial break-in. |

Okay, well...I guess I'll use a 2.75" spinner (which I really didn't want to use, but it's better than screwing up a $200+ plane or a $250+ engine;)). I'll throw my MAS 14" prop on it. I bought a Tru-Turn 2.25" BigCut spinner, that really refuses to clamp down around the MAS 14" prop [:@] and I'd really prefer not to cut it or fly the plane with such a huge spinner. It's the Fliton Edge Freestyle, so it has no yellow anywhere on it and it'll look hideous with a huge, yellow spinner[:@].
After the first 40 minutes, can I switch off to the 15x4W immediately? |

After 40 minutes fun time you should be able to switch to the 15-4W. Watch your temperatures until you gain confidence that it will be OK.

Be careful with the 14x6 and 15x4 as they could over speed your engine if tuned to full peak rpm. Either prop will allow your engine to rev higher that 10,000rpm. While it might turn a higher rpm and not hurt it I never fly my 4 strokes higher than 10,000rpm on the ground.

When run (as per the instructions) filthy-rich for the first 10 minutes you can actually hold the head while the engine's running and it's only luke-warm. It will get hotter as you lean it out -- but the idea is to heat-cycle anyway so the temperature should be controlled with the needle and the throttle rather than the prop. My Saitos have only really seen 4" pitched props and they run *SWEEEET* |

Thanks for all of your input. And yeah, the engine really stays cool for the first 10 minutes. I was kind of worried about how cold it was. Yesterday I finished the break-in, leaned it, tuned it, tuned the low-speed, and retuned the high speed. Idle is at 2100 and completely smooth. 1800 was a little rough, so i upped the rpm's a bit. It peaks with the 15x4W at 9700, enriched to 9400.

Thanks, all help is WAY appreciated!!!! Yeh, church can mess things up just a tad. Mornings are the best time to fly. Just go in the evening. When I was a boy, I had to go to church all spring, summer and fall, so my mother could let me off in the winter for skiing. :eek: |
