RE: Evolution Engines

A friend of mine at the club also has a leaky Evo. Not sure of the size of engine, but it makes a real mess inside his cowl when he flies his plane. I tease him that his carb will soon fall apart as mine did...but he just laughs it off. His engine run a little rough but he somehow manages to keep it going. - For now.

I have a problem with my 46,,,,whats the procdure of removing the low speed limiter?

Loosen the grub screw, then pull the limiter straight out.

Try NOT to pry it up from one side or the other.

Note: When I first did this on one engine, the grub screw had dug into the metal making a raised "lip".

This lip prevented any movement of the limiter.

I had to remove the needle completely ( after breaking off the pin ) to discover this.

Guy at my field just bought a 1.00NX. Ran good right out of the box. I'll report on a 1.20 as soon as it is installed.

Report on Evolution 1.20

I'm no writer, but here goes.

Conditions: Low humidity, 72 degrees, 560' above sea level, Seagull Yak54 .91-1.20, 16X8 Zinger ( I know,,,, junk ), Omega 15%

First run was extremely rich. The "SetRight" limiters are a new burden to me. I like life without limitations. Here is my take on the "SetRight" stuff. I can see why the limits on the low-speed needle are present. With just an ever so slight change to the low-speed needle there is a BIG change to the mixture. Conversely, the hi-speed needle has very small change in mixture when turned aggressively. Once I got the hang of the Evo carb things began to go much better. By the end of the first tank I experienced a bad stock glow plug. I installed an OS Type "F" as suggested in threads about the 1.00NX. It seemed to help.

Second tank was interrupted twice to allow for heat cycling and gradual and brief runs to two cycle on hi-speed.

Third tank I tweaked it a little more and runs became smoother and more reliable. I got a reliable idle RPM of 2010 and a top RPM of 7230.

Seems to pull just OK. It may get better after break-in. We will see.

I really had to be very precise with the low-speed needle valve adjustments. Not at all like an OS. Just no room to fudge it, just room for error. Didn't get to fly it. We shal see.

Your engine is broken in. Two strokes generally don't much need breaking in as with four strokes. You do more good than harm when you heat up a two stroke fast after cranking due to cylinder pinch.

I would try an A3 plug for sure just to see if the 1.20 is like all of the other Evos.

The first tank of fuel on an engine is always hard on glow plugs. I toss mine after whatever break in period I'm using.

Flew the 1.20NX today with both the Zinger 16x8 and a APC 17x6. RPM jumped to 8630 with the APC. Some of the reports on the 1.00 were correct in that the "SetRight" stuff is "interesting". I had to re-set the range of the low-speed needle limiter. I think I'm going to disable them.
