my edit button is gone! that sucks as I need it to fix all of the nonsense I write and make it into something understandable!

oh wait its back ;)

ORIGINAL: Carosel43

I have not actually flown it that much. I would say its got less than 50 flights on it,
Gee, 50 flights without augering into the ground sounds pretty long lived to me! :p

Ha! I do try my best, but most of my models live a decent amount of time. The La7 first flew in march 2010 so is doing quite well really. Its showing signs of its age now though with cracks forming in the fuz, but hey, it owes me very little at this point

At the very top of this forum you will find posts explaining the new RCU software implementation process. The loss of edit functions is explained there. It is critical to the movement of all of the message, picture, and archived data to the new software.

Hi guys,,

just wanted to ask for your opinion, nothing critical though. Because the cowling of my model is tapered a lot to the front I decided to mount the engine rotated by 36 degrees, so that I gain around one centimeter in height to reach the thrust line while not touching the cowl with the rocker covers (see pictures). This also rotates the breather nipple and means that oil will not leave the engine in normal orientation until the model is turned a bit, but the breathing function remains. I don't consider this to be a problem, in contrast this would retain more oil during flight inside the engine and I can empty it afterwards. What do you think?

Regards

I doubt the drain nipple position will cause a problem with oiling. You don't see people complaining about it when they invert their four stroke singles....and it's not like you'll be flying the plane flat all the time either. If in doubt, do a roll...

RE: ASP/MAGNUM FS400AR Rebuild/Overhaul

The breather nipple won't be a issue, Only thing I can see as a problem is one they had with the real radial engines with the bottom head filling with the oil when sitting, If you look at the real ones none have a head right on the bottom, Not sure if the rc ones have the same issue but from the reading I did the real ones did, Looks nice in the cowl too. Hope to get a radial at some point but funds are not so plentiful for such a nice toy for me, but some day ... I Hope LOL

RE: ASP/MAGNUM FS400AR Rebuild/Overhaul

I agree with the others. It will not cause any issues at all. Just make sure you turn over the prop a good number of times before to try and start. this will clear the oil in the lower cylinder. Full size radials are all pulled through prior to starting for the same reason

BIG box to pick-up tomorrow - I wonder what's in it...?? :D:D

RE: ASP/MAGNUM FS400AR Rebuild/Overhaul

Um.... don't they turn the real-deal big radials over 'backwards' to clear the oil in the bottom pots...??

RE: ASP/MAGNUM FS400AR Rebuild/Overhaul

they turn them forwards to the best of my understanding, you wouldn't want to push the oil back into the intake I wouldn't think as the engine will only breathe it straight back in when you try and start it.

But, enough of that, we want photos of your box!! well, the toy that's in the box anyway :p

Ha, sounds good to me! I am slowly building my latest model but sadly its to teeny for the radial :( that said im really looking forward to flying it

Kmot 08-06-2013 10:25 PM

EQ1, that looks like a brilliant solution for fitting the FS400 completely inside your cowl. What type of aircraft is it? :)

Carosel43 08-08-2013 01:55 PM

Hmm, not sure about this new forum software. my computer seems to dislike it and no matter what I do it refuses to realise I am signed in and even if I sign out it wont let me!!

Anyway, the 400 has again been out to play and is still working!

omg!! it took 15 attempts but my post went through :D

Kmot 08-08-2013 02:07 PM

I don't have any trouble logging in, but it does not keep me logged in when I return. It's still a little buggy I am sure. I'm happy to see they have gotten the photos re-enabled.

blw 08-08-2013 04:50 PM

The sign out bug is known and being worked on.

Everyone should go to the Forum Questions or Problems forum. It's at the bottom of the list of forums at the bottom of the page. You'll see 2 stickies placed by the programming team. One is for reporting and discussing, and the other details the steps you need to take to end your login issue.

Carosel43 08-09-2013 08:20 AM

I wonder if it will let me post today...

And I would love to report bugs but its so much effort to get any posts through that im loosing interest fast. I cant post because it thinks I am not signed in, even though I am and it says I am. so I do as it asks and try to log out so I can sign in again. this wont work either. Im sure it will be fine eventually

So, onto radial matters. Just a question about glow drivers. what size battery are we all using and approx. how many flights do you get from it? I am using 6600mah and get about 5 or 6 flights before it snuffs it and the engine wont start.

Hi Tom, it is a Gee Bee R3 from HK, designed for 50cc engines, 81" span. It is an old dream coming true now :) I will send pictures if interested.

Kmot 08-10-2013 10:11 AM

Yes, please do send. I am very interested to see all versions of aircraft that support our little radial engine. :)

Carosel43 08-10-2013 10:44 AM

well, I knew things were going to well. my radial is dead. well, very poorly at least. I had two good flights and was refuelling for the 3rd when I spotted some dark oil in the breather tube. further inspection of the oil from the drain plug revealed a nasty grey mess with little pieces of aluminium floating about. I have not yet got the engine to bits but it doesn't look good at the moment :(

blw 08-10-2013 12:21 PM

Carosel, you may see a lot by smearing the oil in a zip lock baggie and holding that up to a light source. You can also magnify it to look for chunks. You may be able to tell if it is aluminum.

Carosel43 08-10-2013 12:34 PM

ohh they are ali all right. and when they are large enough to feel (like sand grains) you know you are in trouble!. on the bright side the engine cant have run for long like this as there was only a small amount of dark oil under the belly. also the engine was running ok when it landed.

well, here we go again. The radial is back in its natural state (a pile of bits) and I have another problem to fix. This time the master rod needle bearing has exploded. Everything else seems to be in good condition with no apparent damage or rust on my new bearings at the front. I now have to replace the maser rod bearing for the...3rd time? sigh. anyway see pics below
