Bearings are SKF and bought from an industrial shop.

They are surely of the best in the market.

I retarded the timing by one tooth on the wheel. After that, the operation became smooth like silk. Power was still good. However, according to the manual it's not supposed to be like this. There is no problem with piston / valve clearance. Just check this before you turn it over to be on the safe side.

The reason for this shaking between 50-80% could be that the timing is set in a way that some hot combustion gases are not expelled though the exhaust cylcle. This will give detonation due to higher temp in the cylinder during the compression stroke. Higher temp will give predetonation until the RPM gets so high that combustion delay will cause the peak pressure to come to correct position. During lower RPM, the then during compression will decrease, hence no detonation.

Bigger prop and the problem will increase.

Tried the one tooth thing on the 82. Had a rpm drop and higher fuel consumption. Didn't work for my engine. Probably the 100 cam timing is different and worked for you.

There is probably a different compression ratio or a different timing. The engine in question was Saito 80. Known for the high compression. With its original timing and 15% nitro, detonation was so pronounced that it actually dropped in RPM at a trottle-setting at approx. 70% before it increased again as I advanced the trottle further to 100%. Now, after changing the timing, it has become the softest running engine that I have. Power is good, the same as ASP 91. However, the fuel consumption is high.

Yallaair; Its probably trial & error for different engine sizes.

BTW you are talking about moving the cam gear for just 1 tooth back & forth right??

Yes, that's correct. Just check the piston / valve so they touch each other. After adjusting the timing, turn the engine slowly and carefully by hand without glowplug mounted. You will notice at once if anything is incorrect.

Yall, if you have one of the early high compression .80s, an upgrade in the spraybar will fix the sluggish spot, (rich spot) at 70% throttle.

Thanks Hobbsy!
Do you have any information on where I can get this upgraded spraybar? The engine is smooth running but indeed sluggish around 70% throttle. This makes 3D flight difficult with this engine.

Yep, right cheer. When you get it ask for help over in the Welcome to Club Saito Thread. Several there have done it.
