Engine for Nexstar

I used the 46FX out of my Nexstar for another plane a long time ago so I tossed an LA 46 (and a bunch of lead) in the front of it and let some friends try to fly it for practice (They fly C/L). It flew OK, like about 3/4 the power of the FX. We got to playing around with it and I flattened the wings, mixed in some rudder to elevator and put flaps on a 2-position switch. It actually flies better than ever and was fun to fly. In strong wind it gets to be a handful to turn and power is down for sure. I am thinking of putting a bigger engine in it to have more power and was thinking about an ST 51 or OS 55 or something along those lines. You guys have always given me the best advice so what would be a good value, plenty of power and reliable so I can use it in something else when I kill the Nexstar?

A TT PRO.46 would be a good investment, also my friend just put a Magnum .46XLS in his funtana 40 and so far it has performed very good and has lots of power and for $69.99 it's also a good deal. What prop are you running on the .46LA ?

Ed Moorman tested a JBA .56 2-stroke pretty thoroughly here in the engine Glow Engine forum, and he found it to be very comparable to the O.S. 55 AX when both were run with stock exhaust:

At $79.99, the JBA .56 might be one of the best bargains on the market.

Ed's comments were pretty revealing about just how good of a deal these JBA engines are:

I flew it with an APC 12.25-3.75 3D prop, Omega 10% castor blend fuel. I would say an 11-7 or 12-6 would be good props, too. The glow plug is a K&B that I had and nothing special. It didn’t come with one and this one lasted the whole time. I wouldn’t change any of the settings for the first flight. Oh, yes, I had a kill button set up on my JR 9303 and the engine shuts down after maybe a 1-3 second delay.

They both started by hand in usually 1 flip. The only time I used a starter was when I was doing the rpm runs and ran short runs to tune for max rpm, then shot down and changed props. The engine never got a chance to really cool down. I bumped it with a starter and it went right off.

To tell you the truth, I have looked for a down side and haven't found one. It just starts up, runs good and keeps on running. And it will definitely out turn any .46 out there. Maybe not a Jett on a small 10-6 prop, but probably would on a big one."

Microsprint, I am running a 11-6 on the LA. I had never even heard of JBA engines. That's why I ask here because you guys know stuff! Great info guys! Thanks.

For a little more uumph out of your .46la you might try a 11x5, the thrust will go up with the increase in rpm's and might lug the nexstar around a little better, but if you can get at least 11280rpm out of your .46la on the 11x6 then i would go to a 12x4, this will be a huge gain in thrust and actually be less load on the engine and will still keep your pitch speed around 45mph which is perfect trainer speed.

Scott also you may take a look at SK 50 engines too at www.kangkeusa.com.SK s are also cheapest great engines and built in same factory with JBA s.

Thanks guys! I ordered a JBA 56 from BJ model engines. That sounds like it will pull the Nexstar with authority! I'm not looking for good trainer speed, I'm tryin' to tear the wings off! LOL I still have the Nexstar from a long time ago and I never crashed it and it takes up valuable hanger space so I thought I'd have a little fun and I forgot how much fun it could be. One 3-D Nexstar, coming soon! LOL

I used a MVVS 45 that I got from Dar Zeelon. Great engine. I did not like the NexStar, I thought the rudder got blanked out during landing flare. That made it harder to set up a good landing. Otherwise, it flew just fine.

I put one of the JBA .56A motors on my nexstar and it blazes around. Very good motor so far. I have only had the chance to put it in the air twice but I'll tell ya. It'll fly the monokote right off of her. I just ordered a 11 x 6 3 bladed prop to test out on it.
