New engine Prob
Just got a OS .46 to replace a .40 magnum(RIP) but I can not even start it! The engine is hard to rotate, my arms got tired priming it. Also with it that hard my starter will not rotate it. What is the problem? Or What should I do?

RE: New engine Prob
try cracking the glow plug while starting it , it will be hard until you get it brokr in.

RE: New engine Prob
I have checked the glow plug a few times before I quit because my arms got tired. Just got a gym membership today!

RE: New engine Prob
Try warming it up with a heat gun, or even a hair dryer before starting it.

Runt,
The OS.46AX/LA/FX should not be that hard to turn... Is it only hard going over TDC/compression, or is it hard to rotate all around? As to break-in, please read this: ORIGINAL: DarZeelon If you want to follow this break-in thread, it is [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/Tapered%2DBore_Engine_Break%2Din_%2D_Upgraded/m_1850473/tm.htm]right here[/link]! Even "Hobby Services", the OS importer for the USA, [link=http://osengines.com/faq/product-faq.html#q2]agrees[/link] the procedure OS describe in the manual is flawed... OS don't seem to 'second guess' their US rep, but for some reason seem reluctant to rewrite their manual... But this is the way OS usually work... Never admit there is a problem and it will eventually go away... |
RE: New engine Prob
If it's just that the compression is high, or the pinch of the tapered cylinder is too tight, do as Sam suggested above, and loosen the glow plug a quarter turn or so. Then use your electric starter to get it fired up, and cinch the plug tight as it is running (careful of your prop!). I've had .12 & .15 size car engines that required this before my starter box would turn the engines over to start. Once it is broken in, it should not require this.
Also, like Dan said, if the pinch is really tight, pre-heat it with your heat gun to expand the cylinder right before your starting attempt. That loosens up the tight fit enough for starting. Again, not necessary after break-in. |
RE: New engine Prob
I will try both this weekend! Thanks for the comments! But I will get it running or you will see it on the classified ads!
