2c or 4c which is better for hovering?
 

Any opinions on which type of engine is better suited for hovering and 3d flying in general. 2 stroke or 4 stroke?

The 4 strokes have often been favored because of their torque characteristics.

Because of the smaller dia and pitch associated with a 2c, there will be less torquing to the airframe and less tendency for the plane to roll left in a hover.

I have had both on the same plane I learned to hover with.
With the 2s, I could stop rotation and even roll right with full deflection.
With the 4s, it rolled left no matter what.

If you have big enough ailerons, go with a 4s.
Less noise, fuel, clean-up and better sound, but more weight and a lot mo' money.

Bigger diameter props mean more air rushing over the control surfaces for better response when hovering. Most 3d type planes have monster ailerons, elevators, and rudder. The four strokes also have better throttle response for getting out when you're in trouble. My vote goes to the 4 strokes.

Definately 4 strokes! My YS-53 is propped with a 13x4W and is rock steady in a hover. Torque is good when you are doing a "torque roll"!

I have to disagree Jaka. The torque on tap at lower RPM's from a 4 stroke mean that you get results faster than a two stroke that gains it's power up in the revs. It's not a tuning issue, it's by design. We're not talking huge differences here, half second if that. I must admit that I'm somewhat of a 4 stroke newbie as I've just aquired my second (YS91 the first one was an enya 41) about a month ago. I've been running two strokes for almost twenty years though and I can tell a difference. I doubt I'll purchase another two stroke engine. Just my opinion....

Here's my take on this sensitive issue. For my Morris Sudokohi from last summer, I originally had the Saito 72, for about 60 flights or so, and loved it. Then I needed it for another plane so I swapped it for a YS 45. I like the throttle response better on the YS. Bam!@ right there everytime. 11X5 APC. Faster climb rate too, from hover.
I know all about the tork issue over 2 Stroke VS 4 stroke, I currently have a YS 120, 6 Saitos and one OS..and 2 YS 45 two strokes (many more, not relevant)..my favorite 2 stroke engine thus far in a 40 size funfly. For QHORS any cheap 2 stroke is fine w/me.
The GIles 3D I am flying now has a Saito 50, and although I wish it had a wee bit mo power, I'm leaving it in because it's so smooth in hover..and reliable tic tic tic idle.
It just wont blast out of hover...fly out fine out of hover, just not at bullet velocity.

Sorry for the rant, and got absolutely no where....I jus like talkin planes, man...:D

I think it may be the prop is running at a more efficient speed with the four strokes and the response you see ,thrust wise may be better. The two strokes are a bit more like a turbine and seem to have a "spool up " lag .
Both can and will hover . The two strokes usually have a weight advantage for similar thrust ratings . I personally prefer 4 strokes ,but two stroke flyers get up and hover with the best too.

I would go with a YS four stroke for hovering and 3d flying. The throttle response on a YS four stroke is just awesome. Like trailingedge, I highly doubt that I will buy a two stroke engine in the future.
