Most powerful 12 ounce glow engine
Who makes a powerful glow engine (2-stroke or 4-stroke) that weighs in at 12 ounces with muffler? I'm flying a small profile fun-fly (my own design) with an OS .46 LA. The all-up weight (less fuel) is 3.4 pounds. The OS .46 LA with muffler is 12 ounces. I'd like to replace it with a "better" engine, but don't want to go beyond 12 ounces with muffler. I'm already a little nose-heavy.
I see Saito has a new .40 four-stroke (model 40A) at 10.64 ounces with muffler. Will this out-pull the OS .46 LA? The OS .25 FX is 10.8 ounces with muffler, but I don't think it will pull as hard as the .46. Apparently they don't make the .32 SX any more. |
RE: Most powerful 12 ounce glow engine
Horizon quit selling the Saito 40A in 2006. It a nice engine for its size but I doubt it is stronger than a 46 LA.
The 25FX is a very strong running 25 engine but I doubt it is stronger than a 46LA either. |

RE: Most powerful 12 ounce glow engine
I don't know how strong a .46 la is, but my Saito .40a turned a MA K series 12x4 at about 10200 rpm and an APC 11x5 at about the same. It was just broken in with about 12 oz of fuel through it. Weighed 10.8 oz with muffler, 3" of fuel line and however much oil was in it after running it on the stand.

Horizon web site is showing:
FA-40A Stroke Engine by Saito Engines List: $299.99 Item coming soon. SAIE040A by Saito Engines Due Mid June, 2008 So I thought this was an ew engine. Apparently it's been out before and maybe they're bringing it back? I've had a dozen 2-stroke engines over the years and never a 4-stroke. I'm researching the TT and Webra ideas now. I've had very good service from my TT .46 pro... Who sells "West 36"? |
RE: Most powerful 12 ounce glow engine
I think you may be disappointed with the performance of a .40 four-stroke in this application. A four-stroke will probably need to be in the .52 to .56 bracket before it materially outperforms an LA .46, thereby pushing the weight envelope beyond boundaries acceptable to you.
Try one of the ball bearing .32 -.36 class engines as suggested. If allowed to rev, they should outperform the LA without undue weight penalty. |
RE: Most powerful 12 ounce glow engine
From my experience the LA series engines are very low powered in comparison to a lot of other engines. They only have 2 intake ports as opposed to most other engines having 3. My Thunder Tiger GP .42 would out power my LA46. And according to Tower it is about 12 oz.

RE: Most powerful 12 ounce glow engine
I found a NIB OS .32 SX on Ebay. Does anyone know for sure that this will outpull the OS .46 LA? Weight with muffler is 12.32 oz. I need about 15% more thrust to be happy.
Had difficulty finding a US distributor for the Webra engines. Found www.swanyshouse.com. TT .36 pro is available from Tower. West engines: http://www.westonuk.co.uk/index_021.htm. this is the web site in the UK. ANyine know if there is a US distributor? |
RE: Most powerful 12 ounce glow engine
My Thunder Tiger engines have proven to be very powerful and well built. You would probably do well with the .36 Pro. It has a lot more going for it than the LA46. Sorry, the LA series engines just don't impress me at all. If the Tiger doesn't make you happy send it to me and I will port and polish it for ya.

RE: Most powerful 12 ounce glow engine
If the OS32 or the TT36 Pro don't do it stock, they both respond extremely well to tuned mufflers like the Ultrathrust or Jett.

tt36 pro, stock muffler 15500 rpm on apc 9-6, 18000+ on same prop with macs pipe
the os 32 has will do the same if not more.. look for the flying z hobbies MCP for a cheap solid boost for either engine. (the .32 loves this pipe!) http://www.flyingzhobbies.com/spec.html |
RE: Most powerful 12 ounce glow engine
OS has a .35ax although it is not yet available, and I don't know when it will be. I think it is replacing the .32sx. I'll see if I can find a link.
Here is the link for the .35ax, looks interesting, about 13 oz w/muffler http://www.os-engines.co.jp/english/...35ax/index.htm Mike |
RE: Most powerful 12 ounce glow engine
You might want to look at the FOX 40 bushing engine. It has a lot of power in a very light package.

The Evolution .36 NT is 12.4 oz: http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products...rodID=EVOE0360
I haven't seen this particular engine yet, but the others are excellent performers. I'm probably going to buy one for a Sig Wonder kit that I have. |
RE: Most powerful 12 ounce glow engine
I just re-read this post, and you say in the first post that you're flying a "fun fly" profile plane. What are you looking for in an engine. Do you want something that will spin a small prop fast to get speed, or do you want something that will spin a large prop to get some thrust. if it's the later, the saito may work for you, but if it's high revs and speed you want, a 2 stroke is the way to go. The OS 32sx, though discontinued, is still available at many hobby shops. My local Hobbytown has one on the shelf right now. The speed guys love that engine, and are worried that the new .35, like some of the other AX's, may be more of a torquer, and won't like to spin at 17000 rpm.

RE: Most powerful 12 ounce glow engine
Buy a Tower .46 muffler and drill the muffler mounting holes out in the 46LA. It takes one or two drill bits larger size to open the holes in the case enough where the Tower muffler will fit. It's an easy mod if you don't mind drilling the motor out.
Performance boost was pretty good. I did a little testing about 18 months ago. Do a search and you may find it. I posted some RPM with a few different props. Thats what I'd do. If you just need a little bit more poop out of it, this would be the cheapest and easiest fix IMO. Here ya go: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_42...tm.htm#4222232 |
RE: Most powerful 12 ounce glow engine
Sometimes the older generation engines had a good thing going. HP 40 Silverline or Gold Cup is easily under 13 ounces and is a ball bearing engine, great running engine with good performance. Magnum XLS .36 is another choice, for only $69.99

RE: Most powerful 12 ounce glow engine
The Evolution .36 come installed on the H9 Tribute plug-n-play version...
A friend has one, and it runs pretty good...but it could use a less restrictive muffler, or mod the stock one. |
RE: Most powerful 12 ounce glow engine
Thanks for all the good ideas, everyone. To clarify, the plane is a profile funfly. I need torque for large, flat-pitch prop. Right now I'm running a 12x3 wood prop. Today at the field, I opened up the OA LA .46 stock muffler and removed the baffle inside. I picked up a little more thrust and a little more noise. The noise is still tolerable.
Tower hobbies still does not show the O.S. 35. I assume they will be the first to stock it in the U.S. |
RE: Most powerful 12 ounce glow engine
the os 32 is equally at home on a speed plane or a 3d funfly

...could put a PAW .35 diesel on it. That'd give you enough torque :D Only 10.6 ounces too.

RE: Most powerful 12 ounce glow engine
how fast does that .46 la turn a 12x3 prop, and what kind of prop is it?
