I think the Fox 50 is out of production. A pity IMHO, as it is a very powerful engine with light weight.

AT, it was replaced with the .46 ABC which is a very good engine, I have two .50, one is an official .50 and the other is a .46 ABC that I put a .50 sleeve and piston in. Its a direct replacement, the .46 and the .50 have virtually identical power, the .46 weighs slightly more due its thicher brass sleeve. The Fox .50 is the lightest of all .50 sized engines.

I have two of 'em. Both are well over 15 years old and still run great. I remember right after Duke died, I was talking to ...Lessee, was it Terry?....at the plant and I told him I thought there was a market for a .50 ABC with pipe timing. I must not have been the only one to tell them that, since the .46 ABC was a result. :)

I'm curious; why did you make a ringed .50 out of the .46 ABC? fried it? :D

You do realize that the 50 was a mistake. The engine was never to have been a 50 ,but a 46.

What do you base that on? The .50 was sold for years before Duke's demise. The ..46 ABC didn't come along until after Duke died.
A parallel might be the Eagle iv .60 and .74. Both came out as ringed engines. The .60 ABC followed. Maybe the ABC .60 was in the .74 case? I don't remember there ever being a .74 ABC.

Could be wrong. I haven't followed glow engine production since I went electric and gas 4 - 5 years ago.

If you are really fond of your .50 keep your eyes peeled on fleaBay or the RCU classifieds. You may want an engine for spares. Maybe one of the RCU members will contact you with one. I mentioned my desire for an Enya here and a member contacted me and I'm going to buy it.

Charley, I converted the .46 to a .50 because the .50 is one of the best engines to convert to Diesel operation. I learned the from Bob Davis, at the time I didn't even have a .50 but Willy at Fox made one up from spare parts for myself and AMB, formerly DieselDan. I now have two .50s converted to Diesel and one .46 converted to Diesel, did I say I like em. In the picture the .50 is turning a Graupner 12x7 at about 9,500 rpm.

That's interesting. Remember the mufflers from DDD? Can't remember what they called them. I don't see them on the web site now. I had one of them on a Fox.50 that was installed on a Midwest AeroSport 40. You could carry on a conversation while standing next to that engine running wide open. Virtually no power loss either. I lost it in a crash when someone shot me down at an outlaw field near Chicago O'hare airport.

What carb is that on the engine in the photo? Looks like it could be a HB.

Have you run it? I used to buy several low speed needles for tuning purposes. Some of the Mk. X carbs would go lean in the mid range and the engine would flame out if run at part throttle too long. Duke gave instructions on how to fine tune the carb by sanding the end of the low speed needle. I found out that if I had enough needles around I could usually find one that would work OK by swapping them out. :) I guess the QC could have been better on those. :D

I have two. One is in use, the other is in storage. I have a bunch of glow engines I probably will never use again. Ought to inventory 'em and put 'em up for sale. I almost fell out of my chair when I saw what Mecoa was asking for a K&B #4011 .40!

Charley, the carb is an Irvine JetStream, the muffler is a MVVS 3245 I got from Dar. The MVVS mufflers weigh almost nothing and are very quiet. That engine now wears an MVVS 7mm carb, the Irvine carb is now on a PAW .60 that for some reason had a lousy carb. Not normal, the rest of my PAW carbs are perfect.

Give Fox a call about making one up on special order. That's how I got mine in 2006. Cost was not over the top.

The quiet muffler made by Davis I think is called a sound Master

Hope this helps AMB (Dieseldan)

AH! You're right, Sound Master it was, thanks. IIRC the Fox .50 shared its crankcase and head with the Quickee .40 ABC. I don't have a Quickee .40 (couldn't ever get a reliable needle) any more but that's what I recall. All moot now I guess.:D

They found a bunch of parts and will be making both the .10 and the 50's As to were the 50 came from Duke had his castings made in California and the placed closed, catching fox without castings for the 60 after making all the machine parts. This by the way caused fox to buy the equipment to make his own castings. While making a run of Fox .45 an error occured in the liners. What then did was marry the piston and modified liner from the Fox 60 and put it in the the .45 and thus the wonderfull accident that became the 50.
I was very close to Duke from 1975 to his death, we would talk every few weeks.

Wonderful information and Hi Bob,

I bought a couple of your S-Master muffers. They worked a trick.

I talked to to Duke at the '89 Nats - he was always at the combat events - told him I loved his engines but the QC on the carbs could be better. He said that he just had to work stuff in.

When I had a prob with my first Q-40 engine and called the factory, they put me on hold and then came a curt voice, "Fox here." Almost blew me away." Duke was curt but very helpful. I learned a lot from his little blurbs in the mags.

Bob, your SM mufflers were great. I hope there is a market for your muffler expertise in the larger engine market.

My advice is to not look for RPM out of it . 10.5K is where it's happy. I found an 11x7 or 12x6 was good but I was at 1400 ASL.

It will pull stumps with the right prop.

I emailed Fox about their .10 and they quoted me $85.00[X(] I would rather buy an Enya .09 for $49.00. It has more power and lifespan than the Fox. I have an original production Fox .10 and a Cox .09 medallion can spin circles around it.
