percolating engine

Where did I hear the post about the engine that sounds like a coffee maker at idle?

G'day Now that you mention it, my ancient Enya 46 4c sounds like that at idle (without a muffler). Makes a sort of "ploip ploip - ploip" sound. Mike

I was thinking it was in reference to a Fox 2 stroke.

Don´t you mean the "frying eggs" like sound produced by pre-ignitions? I´ve heard it happens with too high nitromethane fuels, glow plug grade too hot or compression ratio too low.

The old OS 60 four stroke makes a "gluke" - "gluke" sound at low idle at times

The frying egg sound is more common in two strokes that are preigniting

G'day W8YE. I think you and I are trying to describe the same sound. I have heard OS open rocker 60s make the same sound that my old Enya 46 4c makes. My Saito 90 3 cylinder radial also made the noise with its standard short muffler stubs. It is not an unpleasant sound, but rather nice. I suspect your "gluke" and my "ploik" are attempts at onomatopoeia (which in turn sounds like a terrible disease but means a word that sounds like what it means as in splash or kerplonk.). Perhaps "gluik" or "pluke".

The sound that a pre-igniting engine makes is less pleasant and more like a tearing cloth or as someone said, frying bacon.

This is more of an intermittent "pluke" sound at idle. Sounds like an old fashioned coffee percolator. It comes from my old model Fox .45 BB ring with the wart on the side. It is a great runner.

I mixed up some methanol and 20% castor oil back in the 60's. That stuff ran real ragged in the engine. Started fine, had a little less power but sounded rough. I thought maybe there was too much water in the methanol?

Needless to say I didn't follow that venture any farther

How about a Pukka, Pukka ,Pukka sound. Like my OS .26 FS

I recorded a vid of a handbuilt 5 cy 4S a while back that had the sound you guys are trying to describe. Not knowing how to post a vid nor really wanting to know at this point it's captive on my hard drive for the time being.
It's pretty cool though[8D]

Hey...can you get it to play the Maxwell House theme? (good to the last drop...or would that be plop? ploink? ploop? )

He he, my friend yallaair`s Enya 120 also sound like that at idle without the muffler and pipe. We used to describe the unique sound as like a aquarium pump (you know the pump that pumps airbubbles into a fishtank) Very funny sound from such a big engine[sm=lol.gif][sm=lol.gif]

A friend had an Enya 1.20 4 stroke that had a broken exhaust...no muffler or pipe...

That sound also reminds me of (Fred MacMurray ) The Absent Minded Professor's flying Model T that was powered by "Flubber" :D
