Saito 180 with perry pump

I have a saito 180 using a perry pump with a regulator hex on the pump.. I am running this on a great planes p6e hawk with a keleo exhaust. The engine starts fine and idles fine. When you advance to full the engine will run for about 30 seconds and then act like it is starving for fuel. I am running cool power 15% and it is known good fuel( already tested it ). The regulator hex is close to fully screwed in all the way. I found on perrys website that the hex screwed in is full fuel flow. I have checked all of the fuel lines and check the preasure line fron the crankcase to the pump. All lines are in good shape. When the engine is at full and it is getting ready to die out it acts like it is getting lean and the engine will get really hot. This is the first perry pump I have ran so any help would be great.

THanks

Your low speed screw may be screwed in too far.

How far out is your high speed needle

low speed is stock and just about flush with the arm.. newer engine. The High speed is the 5 turns out per manual for breaking in... I have tried going in and farther out on the high speed, with no diffrence in the outcome. Full throttle = dead engine after a short run up.. Mid range is also good. Just dies out when full throttle is applied and it acts like it runs the line and pump out of fuel...

Your pump may not be pumping. Which one you have and how is it hooked up?

If your fuel system was working well your LS needle would be set about like this, but after trying two or three of the Perrys, (both types) I switeched to a CLine regulator and IronBay regulator and will never look back. The Cline and IronBay have no adjustment, nor do they need one. The engine will run exactly the same from full to empty.

]The low and high speed are set to break in settings . This engine has one tank ran through at the 4000 rpm then on second tank went to adjust hs and throttle up and found it starving for fuel, or that is what it sounds like...I will attach a pic. The preassure line origanaly had a tee fitting for draing the excess oil. I put on a solid fuel line to see if this was my issue and still had the same outcome

I see one problem and that is that you need to use the hard tube that came with the pump and keep it short. also tee the vent line so the excess oil can still get out plus run the pump.

RE: Saito 180 with perry pump

the hard line that came with it was to short the way the engine mounts....Is the line just too long.. I did have a tee at first and changed it to try and trouble shoot the issue..

RE: Saito 180 with perry pump

With the line that long I don't think any pulses are getting to the pump to operate it. I think the way you explained the tee you meant on the fuel side, I meant on the crankcase pulse side.

RE: Saito 180 with perry pump

That is where I had the tee, it was on the pulse side, I just removed it to try and eliminate it causing the issue...I will have to try and revamp the placement for the pump..

Some observations. The pump looks like an older one; I have read here on RCU that they can go bad with age sometimes. Because you are using the 2 stroke pump if you put a T in the pulse line you will be loosing the pulses. The 4 stroke pump works on vibration and might work better for what you are doing.

RE: Saito 180 with perry pump

You can only use the regulator pump on smaller four strokes, as TFF said you lose some of the pulse with the tee. Also you lose them if you do not use hard line, soft line expands and reduces the pulse. The four stroke pump is what you need, or a regulator.

I ran 5% nitro in a 1.80 Moki and it sagged and shut off at high rpm too, to the point of piston seizure.

Moki recommends a K&B 1L plug, no nitro and a fuel mix with 20% castor.

My Moki now turns an APC 19x8 to 7500 rpm, and it ticks over at idle. My tank sits right behind the engine.

Looks like I will be taking the pump off and tapping a fitting for the Keleo exhaust.. we are having a fun fly at my club tomarrow and I want to have this one running for it. Thanks for all the good advice and I will post the outcome of the maiden of my hawk...

thanks again

If this is a new engine I would run it with the factory muffler and stock carb setup. If it runs well and breaks in after 30-40 min you should be able to get full RPM without problems. I would then add the pump and see if it works. If all is OK then hook up the Keleo exhaust and see if all is still working well. This way you will find out which part of your set up is causing problem. Doc

Go with a Cline regulator and never look back.:D

I have ran a 2 tanks with the stock muffler on a test stand and it was running good. Not until I hooked up to the pump system did I get the problems.. I have tapped and fitted a nipple in the exhaust and took off the vent. So tomarrow I will see how it runs at the field and with luck get to take up the hawk for the first time..
