J-3 Engine Choice?
I posted this elsewhere but I think I am not getting enough exposure so I will re post it here as it's more appropriate.

I flew some years ago but it's been awhile. I have been using a sim and having no problems flying most of the models on it. I have joined the local club and the AMA and I have assistance via the club to help me learn again. I have been reading and reading and I sure like the flight characteristics of the Hanger 9 Piper J-3 Cub 40 ARF. It seems this plane can make an excellent first plane too according to what I am reading. I am trying to select a motor for this ARF. I want to go 4 stroke~OK, I just like the sound. I am thinking Saito and it seems to me that I have a choice of the 56 ACC, the 62 A ACC or the 72 ACC motors. There is not much of a price difference between them. Given these 3 engines as a choice, which would you select for the J-3 in question and why? I have flown the H9 J3 with my Saito FA-56. Flew great. If you are a "gentle" flyer (like me) the 56 is perfect. If you want to throw the J3 around in the sky, use the FA-82. A Saito twin cylinder 90TS or a 60T would be great is money is not an issue.

I have the Great Planes version as the fabric looks great compared to the shiny plastic covering. I have a OS 70SII in mine for wheels and floats. If getting your model to the field is an issue then the 2 piece wing on the H9 is a plus.

I looked at the 90 and the 60 twins but that's a little steep for this build considering I have to buy it all to get into the air.
But I am now looking hard at the 82. |

If you plan on using floats, the 82 is your engine. If you are going to always use wheels, then the 56 would be better.

I had a early model Hanger 9 1/5 scale Cub for many years and I had a Saito 50 in it. The 56 had not come out at the time. The plane performed very well with the Saito 50.

I'd go for the 56 too. Keep the weight down and it will fly better and far more like a real J-3. They have a huge wing and they don't need or like a lot of power. Until recently I had two Goldberg Cubs (very similar to the one you are looking at) and one of them had several engines. The original owner built it for an OS 70 and so that was what I put in it first but it was way overpowered and heavy. I tried an OS 40 Surpass next and it was nice but there was very little in reserve. It was very scale like. Next came an ASP 52 and then an ASP 61 which are almost identical in size and weight. Both were good with very little difference though the 61 was slightly more powerful. It finally ended up with an OS 52 Surpass which was just about perfect. My other one has a Saito 90TS because I could not get a 60T and they weigh about the same. The 90TS is really nice and does not madly overpower the model and would give it enough power to get off water if I ever went that way. I have most of the Saitos from 30 to 100 and the pick for me are the 56 and the 62. The 72 is quite a bit bigger and the 82 is quite a lump. The smaller pair are far easier to handle and also use less fuel. For a Cub like yours, I get the 56 or 62. Mike in Oz/ |

I have two Hangar 9 Cubs. The older heavier version with a Saito Fa56 and the newer version with and Evolution 46. The Saito pulls the old one around nicely. I plan on getting a Saito Fa62 for my newer one. The weight of the 62 as I recall is close to the 2 stroke that's in it now so it shouldn't fly much different other than that sweet 4 stroke sound. I think the 62 will fit the stock mount as well. Not sure about the 72 or 82.

The Saito 50, 56, 62, 72, and 82 all have the same mounting bolt pattern. However the 72 and 82 are wider across the crankcase for the part that fits in between the mounting beams.

Look around for a used Enya 60-4C or 80-4C. If you're a romantic and you love the sound of M.A.S.H.'s "Five O'Clock Charlie", the Enya four-strokes will make you smile, when ran unmuffled. They miss and sputter, but they almost never quit. I polled the folks at the flying field on whether I should buy a muffler for my Enya 80-4C or not (didn't come with one) and they all agreed that the sound that it did make was pleasant and enjoyable. I really miss that transparent red Monokote finished CGM Cub.
I do have a Saito .56 and a couple of Saito .82 engines to run-in. I'm looking forward to it. Being an engine hoarder, as I am, long ago I found it wise to fit my models with the Edson Universal Adjustable Engine Mount, now being sold by RJL/MECOA. Thank you, Randy. Then you can put virtually any engine that you want on your models with a minimum of fuss. And no, they are not heavy. They just look heavy and they are nearly indestructible. Ed, NM2K |

I have saito Fa 62a,OS FS52,enya 53-4C and ASP FS 61,they are good performance in J-3 .
J-3 can fly not need too much power .my friend fly a J-3 cub 40 with a enya 35X(two stroke) ,it is enough power . |

The guy that bought my old first generation H9 J-3 put a OS LA40 in it. The plane seems like a natural to see it flying around.

Man the cub owners sure like their Saitos :) I flew mine with a YS .63, plenty of power for wheels or float flying, so there is another option for you. The only other engine mentioned above, that i'd have enjoyed more than the little YS on my cub, would be the 90T.
