Saito .72 performance
 

Hi folks,

I am wondering what I should expect from my Saito .72 on a 13-7 APC. I never really kept notes on it, I just fly it, and it is my only 4c engine. I made one valve adjustment about 1.5 hours into its life span, and now I would say it has about 60-70 8oz tanks through it. I generally run 15% nitromethane. I am seeing about 9000 peak on the ground and back off from there. Good/bad/middle-of-the-road? My guess is I am down a bit but not much.

I searched and found notes on 13-6 props but not the 13-7 which I think works best on my Pizazz.

The MAS or APC 13 X 6 is the std prop for this engine

There's nothing wrong with 9000 with a 13 X 7 if that is what you are accustomed to using

I don't think that I have a 13x7 for comparison, but the APC 13x6 is a light prop. I think you will turn more on the ground with it.

Sounds like it is doing about what would be expected from it then. I should drop a 13-6 on it again for comparison to the numbers I've seen here, and to remind myself why I use a 13-7. There might not even be a good reason :).

Have you thought about flying the engine and if so what..is it bolted to? you've already looked at prop figures i'm happy with high nines on the ground no matter what size saito and prop combo.As to the reason there probably is..:)

I've flown 60-70 tanks through it in a H9 Pizazz. The combo is great fun. I kinda recall trying the 13-6 and 13-7 some time ago and settling on the 13-7, but as I said it won't hurt to swap again and remember why I think it works better. All in all, it is a great engine.. my first and only four-stroke too! It was easy to set-up & run from the get-go, and very neighbour friendly in comparison to the vast majority of my RC fleet which is heavily populated with wailing high performance 2 strokes.

I just wanted to get an idea of how tired the engine was.

The Pizazz was a good plane. I don't know why Horizon discontinued it so soon like they did.

It was like wonderful with a 72 in it.

13-7 is a better prop for an .82.

At 60-70 tanks, it's probably time to adjust he valves again. I like to see 9500 on my 72. What's your altitude? I'm at 4350 ft and a 12-6 seems about right. A lot depends on what you fly and how you fly it. If you like the way the 13-7 flies, why change? At < 75 tanks the engine is FAR from being worn out, if that's what you're asking.

It is probably due for a valve adjustment if anything. I'm at 700' ASL. I am not bent on changing props or changing anything really - I was simply just wondering where the rpm numbers sat on the "normal for a Saito .72" scale, since I kept absolutely no notes on the engine and realized I had no idea where it stood at this stage of its life.

42etus.. is that 9500 on a 13-7 APC, or just 9500 in general?

w8ye - I guess the Pizazz has been superceded by the Twist. Apparently some folks scratch build Pizazzes because they like them so much, I have a set of plans in pdf form from somewhere. My buddy has the bigger Twist ready to go with a Saito 180, apparently I am supposed to test fly it any day now.

I have a Twist 60 with a Saito 125 that I just love. I've about flown it to death though. I have a new one in the garage.

The twist has a superior Laminar flow airfoil compared with older designs. The high point is way back from the leading edge.

My .72 swings a TF Powerpoint 13x8 on a GP Revolver. It flies very near 100mph. I've tried many props from 13x6 to 11x11. 13x8 my favorite.
