Default Please help me identify this plane.

I'm a longish time lurker, and have looked through many pages of threads, but cannot find out what kind of plane this is. It was one my Grandfather built, the latest it was flown would have been '82. It's over 4' in wingspan, but I don't know the exact number. If it helps, it was built using PSC (PCS?) linear servos, and I suspect it used a 27MHz radio. I'm just getting into the hobby, and this is one I'd like to build.

It looks a lot like a Sig model to me, and asking around some suggestions were the Taurus, Qwik Fli and Kaos, but those don't have the barn door ailerons. I just haven't been able to find one close. I'm not sure if this was a kit, or if he took some other designs and modified them.

Thank you for any responses.

-Brian

It looks like an Orion to me... Is the wing rectangular or tapered?

Brian, it looks like an Orion with a constant chord wing. Here's an image of me with one in 1962. If your grandfather was using one in the 80's it would have been too late for an original Orion. Dan.

Brian,
It is definitely a Top Flite Orion. The wing only looks like it has a constant cord in the photo due to lens distortion. Keep an eye on Ebay, kits come up for auction every once in a while.

Thank you all so very much! The wing does round off at the end, not a sharp rectangle.

I'm not sure when the model was built. He stopped flying everything in the late 70s, early 80s and this one was the one in best shape, so it was kept for me.

Hi,

I agree that it is an Orion. You have a wonderful piece of R/C history there. Looks to have been very well built as well. Your grandfather must have been a good builder also.

Brian, that is an Orion for sure now that I see the wing in that perspective. It is really a jewel of a model. Those ailerons were tough to build. It was designed for reeds. The modern radios would make it all that much better. Dan.
