What I don't like: flying that shows that the pilot has what I call ''runway fright'', where the plane jumps off the runway barely above stall speed on takeoff, usually veering to the left, wallowing all the while like a wounded duck... then floating and bobbing around all jerky jerky-like on landing, bleeding off excessive speed only to finally drop it in at the end of the runway. It is almost like the runway is repelling the airplane! Heh heh.

I prefer flying smooth, coordinated maneuvers. A person that I used to fly with called it ''swooping''. I am not a 3D flyer. I do not have a problem with someone flying 3D, I know it is difficult. It just doesn't like my fire. What really looks ridiculous to me is that B-29 or Cub hanging on the prop.
Also, I agree with some others. A nice takeoff or landing is both fun to do and pleasing to watch. A nice takeoff or landing in a strong crosswind is really satisfying.

For what's it worth this is my insight. I learned to fly on a three channel glider and than moved on to power flight using four channels. Using rudder on gliders and than transitioning into a power high wing trainer with airlerons taught me how to make coordinated turns. Flying in a scale manner requires the use of rudder and far too many so called pilots lack this profinciency. Takeoff and landing are the two most neglected manuvers and most modelers can't do either. It alls' goes back to rudder.

After flying aerobatics in a GA (general aviation) AT-6 Texan and looping. I quickly learned how much pressure my body was under at the bottom of the loop. I have since backed off the throttle (MORE) on my planes coming out of the loops....
It is all about flying without tearing things up.
I hate the term "full scale".

The plane i built last winter has a speed of maybe 30 mph tops and flys very scale .It slows down to a sloooow walk to land . I have ordered two more Ivans plans his twin otter and albatross seaplane. My 99 inch wingspan short solent is electrict and weighs 8 1/2 pounds fuse is about 6ft long ,flys with brushed motors and liposs for a 20 minute flight of scale fun. lol For me it just dont get any better than this. joe

Interesting question and I don't really have a good answer. Even if you want to know how I fly my old timers it varies. Sometimes I like to just float around and catch thermals, other days it's shooting touch and go's, other days I'm hovering over the runway and doing rolling circles. Then I have my 3D planes, speed planes, gliders, and helos.... Variety is what keeps me going in this hobby...

joebahl,
You might like to watch this great little film, featuring a Blohm and Voss flying boat ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFGemmdHgTI&feature=fvsr

Thanks for the video it looks like he was using vario props ,you can adjust the pitch on them . I will be building a 84 inch wing span albatross next and going brushless and vario props this time. I have not flown off of land much in the last 10 years and flying off of water is what i like to do. Thanks again. joe

One more, the dreaded loop-then-roll... When every loop must be followed immediately by a quick roll. barf!
Hee hee, well, you asked!

RE: How do you fly your planes?
when I flew pattern just making the turns I was fast.but in competition I flew fast enough to make my aerobatic routine strong and sharp.I have a few edf jets and speed is all I do with them.I build scale and fly at scalitic sppeeds and don't do manuvers non intended for that aircraft.as for 3d its not about speed at all.do I like speed ...if its a pylon race race .yes.otherwise I fly at speeds I can safely handle with my own skill.

I dont have a problem with 3-D flying as long as they dont do it 4ft in front of my face while iam flying mine nice and scale looking. This goes for heli's also .More and more clubs are making places at the club field so they can fly as wild as they want to with out scaring normal flyers or spectators or wildlife.lmao. joe

RE: How do you fly your planes?
When I go to the field I always take one plane for burning holes in the sky and one for slow easy lazy type flying. Unfortuneatly there wasn't a choice for that. When I watch I like the guys who fly with finesse. It's much more entertaining.

I own a diamond dust, 35% YAK, and a 1/4 scale Taylorcraft. I think its safe to say I like like to fly. Depends on my attitude. I will say this about 15 years ago I saw a laser hovering just off the ground and I thought it was the greatest thing sense sliced bread. The nice part about the hobby is there is something for everyone!!!

I like 3D, I just cant do it so I fly half throthle and relaxed.
But I love watching the guys at my field hovering 40% planes like they were microflyers[X(]
You have to have ability and self confidence( and *&$$#) to do those crazy maneuvers wit planes that cost thousands of dollars

RE: How do you fly your planes?
My flying style is quite conservative. If I have the patch to myself, I will bring the model in quite close, but you'll never catch me doing a low inverted pass. Prop-hanging holds no appeal for me; neither do foamies or anything which is powered by electrons. In fact, my interests are now leaning towards the subtleties of un-powered flight.
When the wx conditions are favourable, there's nothing I like more than to fly the circuit. It's a great feeling to make a series of good landings; then pack up for home .. the most fun you can have with your clothes on.
When the helis and Extras take to the air, I'm content to sit back and munch my sandwiches.
I suppose that makes me an old fart.

RE: How do you fly your planes?
Today 2 nice older gentleman rode up on bicycles as I was flying my Avistar (its got zero dihedral, barn door ailerons and flaps). He told me about a maneuver where you put the sticks in the 2 o'clock position.
Knowing that this is a Lomcevak I had no problem doing one and showed him it. After a few passes my timer went off and his friend asked if i was going to land.
I pulled the power back on the down wind, turned 90 to the left. Turn another 90 straight at us, dropped the flaps and went to just above idle.
The plane floats by and all 3 wheel touch down at exactly the same time.
I grin and pull into the pits.
