This one is a looker and flys even better!
Here's a pic of mine with the Sig Rascal landing gear!
Took a while to get used to the beauty of the original gear but hey, ground handling is a dream!
Doing a Byron Hybrid currently. Byron fuselage with scratch built wings. Don't like the foam wings. Using a ZDZ 40 rear intake/rear exhaust engine. Going to be nice.

Hey Stickbuilder, try to readjust the settings on your pic. When I open it it stays very small, I can't admire your work using a magnifying glass...LOL!

I don't blame you I never was a lover of foam wings either. The exception being I do have an old Ace Simple Series Staggerwing wing kit I want to build and I want to recreate a blaste from the past a pair of Ken Willard's Sunday Fighters.

Hey Flyer, how far along are you on your SC? Would love to see your progress.

Stickbuilder, thanks, that helped. Your model looks great! Does the inside of the glass fuse need any additional support?

Not far at all I have assembled ywo sets of main spars and rear spars and two sets of wing ribs have been cut out by hand. The fuselage parts have been laser cut but the building crutches have failed miserably. The decals are made and the custom Instrument panels purchased and the first one delivered. I have two sets of custom landing gear blocks with on set of Oleo struts and pants. I hate the pants and will probably carve a new plug then make a mold to make a fiberglass set. Attached are photos of the spars and a dry fit of the wing ribs. As you can see in the one photo Rib No.1 is 17.75" vs the Tip Rib at 4.75". Now that's what I call a tapered wing!

The fuselage is very rigid. Install the formers with additional fiberglass mat and resin, or Hysol them in place. The weak spot is the firewall. It's only 1/8" ply. I cut a new one out of 3/8" aircraft ply. It's much more solid. Another potentially weak spot are the landing gear trunion mounts. I built them from aircraft ply that is thicker than what was supplied I think I used 3/16". The wings that I scratched are lighter and stronger than the foam wings. The problem that I had with the foam wings was the ease in which they ding and the loss of rib detail when you glass them. I'm not crazy about the flap linkage as designed and supplied either. Open bay design allows me to use conventional linkage and 2 servos. The wings mount exactly like the foam versions. Just took doing my gozentas when drawing my working plan. Ribs are cap stripped and diagonal braces really resist torsional twisting.

Stickbuilder, I think you are on the right track with your modifications just don't overbuild the gear supports. It's better to have the gear tear out in a crash then spread the damage over a large area.

The Byron designed gear mounts are part of the wing mounts as built into the wing center section which is part of the fuselage assembly. It would be virtually impossible to only damage the gear mounts without tearing out the entire substructure. I built them more robust in order to keep the gear correctly aligned during the takeoff and landing roll. I'm using Robart Robostruts with the Robart wheels. Everything articulates within the strut/pants cover. It's pretty complicated and I didn't want any lost motion. If you've never built a Byron Originals model, you don't begin to know where the engineering group cut corners to lighten up the airframe so that the engines of the day (Supretigre 2500 and Quadra) could fly the models moderately well. They had some great ideas such as the Byro mount, and some not so good ideas such as the Byro Drive.

About to start a Black Horse 92 1/2" Ryan STA, Saito FG30 Gasser. The prototype will be Ryan STA construction number 132, NC16043, one of two imported into Australia pre WW2 (1937). Not to be confused with the ex-Royal Netherlands East Indies STM's that were imprest into Australian service during the war. NC16043 became VH-UZQ, then in 1951 VH-BWQ, with a DH Gypsy Major replacing the original Menasco, then, after a rebuild in 1997 VH-UVQ. VH-UVQ was purchased by Aerotec's Lynette Zuccholli and remained based in Toowoomba, Queensland until sold to Jan Roozen, Cannes, France in 2011.

I will model my Ryan as VH-UVQ, as I remember it well from my General Aviation days in Toowoomba. The Aerotec hangar was a source of amazement, the Ryan not it's only star, but also a Fiat G51 Centauro and a Hawker Sea Fury being some of many magnificent flying aircraft in the collection.

So, some work to do. That Menasco-ish cowl will need reworking to suit the Gypsy Major, plus a different exhaust stack, the forward cockpit will need opening up and both appropriately detailed, the airshow colour scheme will need to be reworked to polished aluminium and silver doped fabric surfaces.

I will probably use Flite-Metal for the aluminium and silver fabric for the rest. Extra detailing will include landing and flying wires as well as a proper tailwheel. Whilst I have access to the wing interior I want to have a good look at the U/C mount and see if that needs some local strengthening, as I have had some unfortunate experiences with ARF's in this area.

Photos of Ryan C/N 132 throughout it's life in Australia. The Ryan in the flying photo (VH-UVQ) is my chosen prototype.

I am planning a similar finish on my Ryan SC-M/W project except I'm using AeroFoil since its a little lighter and I can order by the foot.

Love to do a large scale Ryan SC, have a Saito FG60R3 Gasser that would suit that radial cowl nicely.

Back to the STA, Black Horse must have done a number of versions, my downloaded instructions show glassfibre control horns, removeable tailplane halves and a removeable forward upper fuselage. I expect the removeable forward upper fuse was for the electric version. Mine has a 1 piece stab and threaded control horns, no issues there, but I was hoping on the removeable fwd upper fuse to make the dual cockpit install relatively easy. Bit more of a challenge now! To their credit Black Horse fitted a reasonably acceptable pilot and the instrument panel, although over-instrumented, at least doesn't include digital glass screens! Even so, I will fit more accurate instrument panels and a Williams Bros 'Standard' pilot bust.

I think most of these ARF's are loosely based on the Maxey Hester SIG Ryan render of the Gosney 200 Special. My Ryan has the similar large aileron/small flap layout, not a big problem, just means whittling out new flaps and ailerons to match STA 3-views. Even so, the flaps on mine don't appear to finish close enough inboard and that could mean a small mod to the wing to get it approximately right.

I must say I am not wanting to produce a museum-scale competition model, but one that looks right and is fun to fly.

Hi guys. I am doing some research on the Ryan STA and was hoping that you could point me in the right direction as to which way to go to either build or assemble one. I have reviewed the Sig kit build thread, the RC Guys ARF as well as the Phoenix ARF and some comments on plans and am not sure which way to go. I'm leaning in the direction of building the 1/4 scale one from the Fields plan which I believe is available through the Air Age Store, but don't know enough about it. So I figured the brotherhood could really set me straight as to the one that would provide me with the right balance for me .........I.e. not be too difficult a build and the best to fly..

Appreciate the help. Thanks.

Hi Flyrc67, would you be content with the Sig 1/5 scale kit which are still available on eBay occasionally and usually run in the $225-275 range? It's a great kit, or do you want something a bit larger in the 1/4 scale range? (BTW, the Ryan ST-A thread was my build.)
