Please add me to your list Raptureboy. I'm building a Sig Ryan STA kit but have converted the build to a
STM. It's coming along slowly (two years since I began the build !). I have covered it with SIG coverall
and I'm now at the colour doping stage.

Wow!

I didn't know there was a Ryan Brotherhood?

Started building this model in the early 70's. Scratch built from plans. I misplaced the plans, but can still finish the model.

WOW!thats amazing Charles. I don't have but a couple of old motors left of my 70's rc days. Idropped out after HSin 74 and didn't get back in till 03. I bought a SIGcub from the 80's from a guy who never finished it. Boy it took alot of sanding to get it ready to coverI hope this threadwill inspire you to finish it. Would you like to be added to the brotherhood?

Charles, I think it's time to finish that project that you started in the 70's! Looks like you did a nice job of building it. What engine do you now plan on using in it? What size is the plane?

This is what my Ryan looks like at the moment.

Sign me up boys! The Ryan STA has to be my all time favourite aircraft. I own 4 of them now - a GP ARF Ryan STA Special, Sig Ryan under restoration, Sig Ryan kit NIB and Golden Age Models 1/4 scale kit (my next project, actually).

I posted this over in VJs thread in the Kit Build section, but it should also go here. I offered to help a fellow Ryan Brother who needed the plastic parts to do a scratch build of the Sig Ryan STA. I just made plaster molds of the parts which I'll use to ther****rm new parts from. This does not include wheel pants or the cowl which are available from Fiberglass Specialties. So, if you're interested, please PM me.

Raptureboy, how about adding the lesser known Ryans into this deal? I would like in. If you look at my avatar you'll see a Ryan SC (Sports Cabin) I am currently building (in 1/5 th scale) one 1937 SC-M prototype and one 1938 SC-W Production model. And for all you Ryan lovers with inquiring minds the "M" denotes a Menasco C4S engine and the "W" denotes the Warner Super Scarab engine.

By all means please add your pictures! This only started out because there was an interest in VJ's build but I for one would welcome some other models that may not get the attention they deserve. Consider yourself signed up!

Thanks Raptureboy!

Attached are factory photos of the Ryan SC-M prototype and the Ryan SC-W production model. The third photo shows the air brake deployed. Ryan's answer to flaps for the SC. It reminds me of the drive brakes on some of the WWII Navy plans.

Here is one more of how she looks today. The owner is Russell Williams out of Washington state. He has a website with a great photo album with a lot of Ryan photos taken over the years.

Nice pictures Flyer. I never knew about these variations. You can see how they progressed into the enclosed cockpit and the all metal skin from the earlier models. Thanks for sharing, these are such classic aircraft and the wheel pants make me think of the spats men wore on their shoes back in the day.

I agree, those are some nice photos of beautiful planes...thanks for posting Flyer. It must take quite a bit of work to maintain the finish on all that aluminum!

Just an FYI, they were so new to aluminum skins they used over sized rivets. Most planes this size would ue 1/8" the Ryan had 3/16" rivets. The wing was covered only from the leading edge to the main spar with metal. The remaining part was fabric covered. The tail feathers were also fabric covered except for a fairing where the horizontal stab. passes thru the vertical stab. The Ryan SC-M was on available as a Comet rubber band powered kit. It was the first kit I ever built when I was ten years old. I have been ion love with this airplane ever since.

Well since you mentioned it you might check with Bob Holman. He has the Mammoth scale Ryan SC plans, designed by Jim Pepino if I remember correctly. The Ryan is sporting a 112" wingspan in this design and it calls for a 2 cubic inch engine. I own a set of these plans and can say they are pretty straight forward the only complaints I have is the firewall is a little too round and he didn't add the air brake between the wheels. In his defense I have been going nuts working on a easy solution to building the air brake myself. Bob is now offering laser cutting and may be offering a laser cut short kit as well. Check with Bob H if you're interested.

Thanks for the tip Mike I will check into it...How cool would that be to have a ST-A and a SC-W in the hanger!

I'd like to join! I had two Ryan STA's back in the early 80's a sig and a quarter scaler also. Just finished the GP Waco and am seriously looking at the Blackhorse Ryabn 120!
thanks,
Dan
