Default Banana Oil

Iím building a dog smith MiniPlane. I have decided to use Nylon and Dope for the covering. Could someone please explain what banana oil is for? Iíve used 50% and 75% dope / thinners to build up the coats and shrinking thinners on open areas to get a bit of tension. All advice welcomed.

I used to hear that term used quite often, but never knew quite what it meant. Just now looked it up and found the following:

"Also calledam∑yl ac∑e∑tatea sweet-smelling liquid ester, C7H14O2, a mixture of isomers derived from amyl alcohol and having the characteristic odor of bananas: used chiefly as a paint solvent and in artificial fruit flavors; amyl acetate."

From this I believe banana oil was probably used as a solvent in airplane dope at one time. I have been building models since the late 1940's and don't know that I ever actually smelled that odor, but for some reason the name has persisted.

I have used it when I was building models as a kid. It was used to retard the dope and to reduce excessive shrinkage, which would warp our small stick built models. It really did smell just like ripe bananas!
