Default Please help identify this old R/C plane

Hi all,

Would like to have some opinions on this plane...

http://volcano.photobucket.com/album...RC%20airplane/

I bought it strictly for decoration. I wanted an older large R/C
plane to hang from my ceiling. So it didn't matter if it had an
engine, servos, etc.

What I would like to know is... any info about it. Can anyone offer
opinions? Wondering what year is is roughly. It is a kit from the 1930's? 50's?
70's?

After seeing it in person it looks much older than in the pictures. It's very weathered. The construction, cables, wood, and so on just seem very old to me. The wires in the front that used to attach to the engine look like old 110 line from a house. If somebody said it was built in the 70's I would have a hard time believeing it. It just looks much older than that upon close inspection.

Basicly any observations by looking at the photos would be helpful. I'm just
trying to learn something/anything about it.

Any feedback is appreciated.

Thanks,

Brian

Edit: The following is incorrect. Sorry.
Paul

Brain,

The plane itself is a Beechcraft Staggerwing (edit: nope, it isn't). Hopefully someone else can give you an idea of who kitted it and when.

The Staggerwing has the wings staggered the other way. Top wing farther aft than the bottom wing. The shape of the tail suggests Stinson.

Les,

Right you are! Oops. Thanks for the correction.

You have a nice Waco Cabin biplane. Probably a YKS-6 or YKS-7......

Looks sorta like a well-detailed Cleveland kit (on of the largest versions - they had many of their designs available in 3 or 4 sizes).

Many thanks guys!

Yes Scott, I have the wing struts.

The pictures shown are from Ebay, I bought it friday and brought it home yesterday. I had to put the wings on and re-attach the supports. It now hangs from the ceiling in my garage.

I'll post a few pictures in about an hour.

Thanks for the pictures Scott. It appears to be a YKS-6, the front windshield on the 7 is different.

Does anyone know what year the YKS-6 came out? (real plane)

Is there any way to figure out what year and manufactuer my model is? (roughly)

I'm just trying to get a ballpark on the age of this thing.

Thanks again.

Around 1934.

It could have been built from a set of plans. I don't remember ever seeing a kit of the YKS.
Here is a site with lots of info about Waco aircraft........

Thanks Scott.

It appears to be built from a set of plans. And my best guess it was built in the 50's or 60's.

Ok... now I have another question unrelated.

I know I should be posting a new topic and the right section but...

After buying the Waco and having it as a static display I couldn't help myself in looking around for a cheap way to start flying. Always wanted to get into this hobby but cars and cash always held me back.

I was looking in the hobby store the other day and on Ebay. I ended up buying this.....

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=3165283845

If the link doesn't work it's that "E" place and Item # 3165283845

It's a HOBBICO SUPERSTAR kit. The one with everything.

I thought it was a good deal for a first R/C buy. Please tell me I didn't get burned, hehe. I'm a little nervous about it. My homework found that fully loaded kit to sell for around $250. And the field kit for $50. That's $320 with tax and/or shipping. So I figured $257 delivered to my door was pretty darn good for 4 ch, 3 axis, good construction, gas engine, good radio and field kit.

Everything else I looked at for under $200 was electric or 3 channel and junky. Reason I bought this was I thought it would be a good set-up to start off with roll, pitch, yaw, throttle and top wing from the beginning. I figured I can get comfortable with all the basics in what this set-up has to offer, then I will be in a better position to fly a larger more costly scale plane.

I have never flown R/C but not new to flying.

To get back into rc again, I bought a Hobbico Avistar arf (less radio and engine) for about $100.00. I had to buy the radio and I already had an engine for it. The Avistar is a very nice flying plane and the only difference between it and the Superstar is the airfoil. The Superstar has a flat bottom wing which is great for a trainer and the Avistar has a symettrical airfoil which is slightly better for learning beginning aerobatics.

I use it now to fly on real windy days when my old timers are kept in the hangar If your plane is new, you probably got a pretty good deal though I don't know what they are going for new. At least you got a really nice plane to get into rc flying with. Join a flying club and get an instructor with a buddy box to help you out until you solo. It'll save you a lot of trouble!

Good luck and enjoy the hobby,

Scott
