Default Barth YMF 1/3

Slow progress. Spent too long fooling around on throttle linkage that's on rear mounted carb on Evolution 152 GX. In my case it's inside the wood motor mount box. I was unhappy with my first attempt with the pushrod buried behind firewall. Then I read the instructions on automatic choke. When I asked, most with Evolution engines don't use it. I probably won't need to either. but I still set up a linkage for that and throttle. Decided on bellcranks for both, and pushrods back to where servo(s) acessable. See photos.

Dang Chuck, I would have saved $300 buying your Waco with engine over just the AMR kit with duties and shipping!

I hope your health improves, these are massive projects to complete.

Yes I'm going to keep flying but will move down to 30cc planes. I'm also selling my 35% Extra 260.

Yeah, I know a couple of guys at the field who have been downsizing there fleet because the bigger planes were just too heavy for there old bones. But, there still just as happy to still be flying. I watched a guy trade a 60 sized top flite corsair for a giant scale corsair, both RTF, even trade. Worked out great for both of em. Again chuck, I wish you the best. Steve.

Hi Fly,
I used .040 half round from Evergreen and I was pleased with the results. The Evergreen product number is Product Number: EVG240. Here is a link

I have a 1/6 Platt kit. I built one years ago. Mine does not have the ribbing either and I couldn't remember if it originally came with them like the Pica kit. Did you use that Evergreen half round on the smaller Waco kit? Is it applied on both sides of the ailerons (I assume it is). Thanks!

@ Skypup - The kit in the picture is 1/5 scale I believe. It has a 72" wingspan etc. Yes it is applied on both sides to simulate the corrugation.

Here is a picture of the real aileron for reference.

Would the product you mentioned be used for 1/5 scale not 1/6 scale or would it look ok on either?

You might try .030 size for 1/6 scale. Plastruct makes this size.

Hey guys, I just did some "checkbook modeling" and purchased an old Proctor 1/3 Waco from a gentleman in the Pacific North West. It's such a beautiful airplane I was wondering if any of you guys might know anything about the man who built it. I found a picture of what I am reasonably certain is the airplane I purchased on the Proctor website with the builder. Joe from Proctor only knows it's been on the site for several years. I suppose I'm just curious about the man that built it.

How do people like the Proctor Waco? I'm very excited to find such a beautiful model, and can tell by some of the pictures it was built with attention to detail in mind. It outlived it's builder, I hope I can honor his efforts by giving the model a new life.

Thanks in advance,
Cody

Cody,
The Proctor Waco is actually the Barth Waco. Guys seem to really like them. You will find more info if you do a search for Barth 1/3 Waco. What size motor is in the plane?
Later!!

Thanks Anthony- so, Proctor- Barth. Got it. The airframe comes with a Brison 100cc gas twin. A little on the small side, but it would probably fly the plane in a scale manor. Of course I dream of throwing a big radial on the nose, but that might not fly with my significant other. Or my credit card company. Total ~$6K for an airframe and motor is a little rich for me. I'm sure a DA-150 or DLE-170 would be perfect for it, but I dream of the Evo 7 cyl 260cc... I'm hoping to fly it for the next year or two with the stock motor and save my pennies for the Evo. I might be selling a few things to help me cover the costs as well.

Anyway- I'm glad I found such a beautiful plane for what seems like a very decent price. I guess I won't know until I can make the 2,000 mile round trip to pick it up!

I have a NIB AMR 33% Waco sitting in my airplane closet. If I sell that and one of my other 100cc aerobatic planes it would just cover the new engine. Only problem is, I still want to build the AMR! D'oh!

Cody,
The 100cc should fly the plane fine. The Barth kit builds lighter than the AMR. Check the weight on the plane when you get it. My AMR is sitting at 60 lbs. I have a 3W-157 and it is plenty of power. I am interested in seeing how much your plane weighs.

When you build your AMR you need to put the tail on a diet. I removed approx. 9 oz from the tail and still had to add 3-4 lbs of weight to the engine box. If I were to build another one I would put the elevator servo's in the fuse behind the cockpits and save some more weight.
Later!!

Thanks for the heads up. I was planning on lightening the tail already. Even with a 260 on the nose lighter is better!

Barth YMF 1/3

Working on struts. Getting there slowly. Maybe another month and it will be framed.Still have not bought all the electrical, transmitter, receivers, servos, batteries yet. Lots of options on redundancy and I'm still sorting. Have gotten a number of good comments on how to best set up electrical..

Beautiful! Nice work. What is that on the nose? An evolution/ MVVS 150?

Once the airframe is complete, how easy will it be to access the fuel tank etc... for new fuel lines and batteries? Does the bottom wing center section come out? Of do you have to go through the cockpit? I like to have access whenever possible. Being able to inspect the strut mounts, etc. is one of my concerns.

Thanks,

codiddley,

The engine is an Evolution/MVVS 150 bought on ebay dirt cheap, NIB. I still don't know why they discontinued them. I have a couple aluminum brackets securing fuel tank. I can remove rear bracket and slide tank to rear and out cockpit hole (I think, but have not tried yet). Not shown (or designed yet) are a couple doors on sides of fuse right behind firewall. I can remove one or both and have access to fuel lines, etc. I was advised these can be tail heavy so I'll try to get batteries forward as much as possible. Waconut said this is lighter than the Canadian version. All I can say is it's plenty heavy. Lower wing center section is permanently glued in.

Barth Waco YMF 1/3

Continuing to work on struts. You would think one could make two identical sets. Didn't work. Enough difference in wing bracket lateral & vertical to make the lengths different. This job has been a much bigger PITA than the Pepino 1/4 I built some years back (and the Pepino design was full of errors. This isn't.). All little stuff on this one that I probably could have avoided with better attention to detail. Like the aluminum rivets to attach brass fittings to ends of struts. I was just a hair too thick on two of the wood struts and didn't get a decent head on a couple rivets. Where do I find soft aluminum rivets 2 mm dia by 6 mm long? Looked online but didn't see any. Plan calls for center section wing wire turnbuckles to attach inside to bulkhead. Can be reached to tighten turnbuckle after top plywood on through cockpit hole, but I turned one wrong way and had an end come off. Real headache getting the end back on turnbuckle.

I need to leave it set a couple days.

Anybody else stubb their toe on these designs?

Hey guys. I finally pulled the trigger on a 1/5 Waco build and ordered plans and templates seeing that I already have all of the abs parts and a REAL desire to own and fly this plane. ( it's always been my favorite golden age bipe.) anyway, not that I'm trying to be lazy, or have someone else do the foot work, but does anyone happen to have a material list as far as balsa and ply go? I'm sure I could figure it all out when I get the plans, but I want to start rounding up the needed materials now. If someone already had a list, that would be great, if not, I'll just wait and figure it out myself. Thanks, Steve.

Hi guys,

It's been awhile since I have been on this forum. I haven't received any emails regarding new posts for a long time.
I was brousing EBay for something and discovered this PICA 1/5 scale WACO kit. Another one sold about a week ago for under $200.00 and this one is still well below that with time running out.
Good luck!
Joe

I don't have a list, but I will tell you that the wood that came with the kit made these models much heavier than was needed. The ribs etc. are way too thick, and if you look at the templates, I listed the original dimension of the wood. You can reduce that by at least one sixteenth and still be okay. Way too much hardwood in the kit, and the wing tip blocks can be eliminated by laminating spruce tip bows. I'd also recommend doing some of the modifications that we have done, such as the redesigned wing plan and the much stronger wing joiners.

Thanks bill. As a practice, I always try to make them lighter. I usualy look at what it should weigh, come up with a lower number as a goal, and shoot for it, without sacrificing structural integrity. Most models can be made quite a bit lighter and still be plenty strong enough.as for the mods, where can I find some info on it without having to read through 677 pages of posts? Any idea? How's the scale outline of this kit? I've never built an "actual scale" model, but I want this one as close as I can get it. Man, I'm looking forward to this one. Thanks guys, Steve.
