Barth YMF 1/3

More slow progress. Struts and aileron slave rods almost done. Went with two aileron servos and just driving upper with slave rods. After sanding struts forever I went with Glen Torrence aluminum for slaves. Would have done same for struts if he had the cross section needed. Is it cold where you are? Nasty here in Chicago area.

Yes, very cold here in Ct. But probably not as bad as where you are. The Waco looks great.

Yay!! Let the cutting begin. Just got my wood order for the wings. Hopefully I got everything, but if not I guess I'll have to get what I need at my LHS. Just for your info, I ordered from www.balsawoodinc.com. The quality is great, shipping and prices were very reasonable, and only a few days from order to doorstep. I will definatly be ordering from them again.

Can anyone explain this to me with the modified wing ribs? Are some modified while some stay per plan? For example, as for the modified ones, I got 1,2,3,4,5,7,8,17,18,19,and 20. I know that some of the missing numbers are tip ribs, like W10, I guess my only concern is W6. That's the only one I don't have on the modified temps.

BTW, the wood quality is great. I was a bit concerned with how much lower there prices were.

Steve look at W5 rib and you will see where to cut the tail end off to get your W6

Was doing a search for 'other' stuff and came upon this webpage

http://www.wacoairmuseum.org/

Wasn't sure if it'd been posted before (kind of hard to keep track of all posts in a +680 page thread) but even if it had been it was worth re-posting

I'd be in for one or two. Work has finally started on the WACO. All top wing ribs are cut, and center section has been started. I was going to cut all of the wing ribs for the bottom wing at the same time, but my hand was cramping up.also, my work bench was about a foot too short, so I had to build a bench on top of a bench if you will. One thing I do like about it, it brought my bench top from 36 inches up to 41 inches high. Much easier on the back.

I don't know how much I would follow what I'm doing. I'm not a pro builder like these guys. This is my first plan build, and I'm only posting pics in hopes that if I am making a mistake that one of the seasoned pros will catch it before it becomes a major issue. It's kind of a daunting feeling to show your work to a bunch of guys like the ones found in this thread, but if It will help me to end up with a beautiful Waco, then I'll get over it. Steve.

Can anyone help point me in the direction of bills( stick builder) adjustable cabanes? I wish there was a section in the index for modifications. I looked for about five hours but can't find anything. With almost 17000 posts it's tough to find things.im at a stand still until I can sort this out.. Thanks, I hope I'm not being a bother with all of my questions. Steve.

I think, in this case, I'm putting the Waco on hold until I can figure out A. What mods have been done, and need to be done, and B. Where I can find all of the info on these mods. I studied the plans through and through, as well as the build manual, and felt prepared, but what I should have done was to read through all 501 pages of this thread. The one thing I don't care to do is to have to take work apart, which I already have to. I started at post #1 and am now 14 out of 501 pages in. If nothing else, I'm getting acquainted with all of you and all of your work. I feel as though it will be VERY time consuming, but very much needed. If anyone can throw some thoughts at me as to what areas need to be closely looked at would be helpful. Well, I have some reading to do...

Stevegauth230,

I looked for Bill's post sometime back and never found it. I wanted adjustable cabanes as well for my 1/3 Barth Waco, but I gave up and silver soldered the ends to the top of wires. When I thought about the effect on strut length I decided to forget it.

Well, just found this great thread and think I have a lot of reading to do. Sold the 1/5 scale airframe built but not covered a few years ago and since I love bipes, (still have the Super Skybolt) regretted it ever since. Found a 1/5 for sale and grabbed it up quickly. Looks to be covered with fabric and dope, (similar to my old Norseman) and painted red with cream trim. I'll post some pics later.

With other commitments had it put aside for a while and just started to dig into it. Still had the original aileron bellcrank setup and was horrendously sloppy, Took quite a bit of work, the most difficult was feeding extensions through the original wire holes in the ribs. Have bays built with C/F servo plates painted to match as close as possible. Also had to brush in adhesive along the outer edges of the cutouts to rebond the covering.

Currently I'm replacing the stock tailwheel with a spring rig. We fly off grass and I find the control much better, along with removing a lot of stresses from the rudder and aft fuselage. Was a bit of fun pulling the wire from the rudder and now plan to cut a groove into the bottom of the fuse and rudder to fit a large pin hinge. As it stands there is nothing connecting the two below the mid-hinge line.

It had prior been powered with an OS 120FS. I'm fitting a Saito 125a. Had to add a doubler to the front of the firewall as the old steel mount had crushed and deformed the wood. Suspect a bit of overtightening! Also pulled the original 16oz tank as it had some serious clogging. All cleaned out now, but wondering if that's a bit too large. I normally fly 9-10 minutes and my T/T Rare Bear with the same engine pulls approx half of the 12oz supply.

Have a few questions on this one. With no plans, looking to confirm the CofG location and normal flying weight. With that HUGE cowl and all that airframe sticking out in the breeze wonder if that is enough power for vertical performance and what the best prop combi will be. Note: Rare Bear is close to 13lbs, but obviously a lot less draggy.

Was the thrust line offset? Visually the firewall appears dead on and the original mount looks bolted dead center. With the mount fitted cannot see any deflection.

The original C/F and wire tail pushrods are also a bit suspect. The wires at each end are quite long and prone to bending under load. Not so critical on rudder, but elevator has my comfort level lower than I normally like. Anyone have a better solution?

p.s. Like to join the brotherhood.
