A couple of the more senior members of my club have Junior 60's that always seem to fly so so well. I was truely inspired when I was offered a flight with one of them and ended up flying it all afternoon. I promptly ordered the plans from Ben Buckle and a couple of months later inbetween other builds started to build it. I must say it has been one of the most enjoyable builds ever, being straight forward in design and contrustion. The build is almost complete now but below are some of the pic I have taken on the way . . .
Any body else care to share any Junior 60 experiences and build changes ? I have noticed there have been quite a few changes in the plans over the years . . .

Here are some more pictures of the build - I have decided that the covering colour scheme will be like the 'Flair Models' ARTF as I liked it so much, on the other hand I dont want people to assume that it is an ARTF!

VERY nice build going on! There's something special in taking an old plan and some wood and "giving birth" so to speak to an antique aircraft design. I'll follow along with you on this one as you have a beauty in the works. Love the look of that clean framework on this build. Joe

Spent another 3 hours or so on the Jr60 . . . wood glued the rudder and stab assembly, I have decided to go with the original locating dowl and rubber band and small hook fixing assy for the tail surfaces as I think it adds to the overall vintage look of things. I was unsure about how to tackle the windows as I think accetate if not done very well can look messy and untidy so I decided to use clear solar film - this has proved to be very successful particulary around that small tight front window.
I couldnt bring myself to drill holes for the elevator horn so I bent some wire and silver soldered a small arm on it - very pleased with the result also, makes for a neat job.
The black film on the front was not nice to do but I am reasonably happy with the results.

The Junior 60 has just rolled off the production line, all done what a satisfying build. If I had to do it again would I? To bloody right. Great herritage this bird will fly well, AUW is 3.61 Lbs plan says between 3 and 4 not an once of lead in sight.
Saito 40 FS, godda lov'um . . .
I will try and get some decent pictures in the morning with natural lighting (outside)

Actually it's due to the poor lighting, its actually solar film cub yellow, the wheels I am not sure - radio active I think the hubs are painted with black enamel . . . Thanks for the nice comments.

It's a beauty! Is the "60" for a 60 inch span? At that size and weight the Saito could take it straight up as far as you can see. I have one of those old Saito 40s in the 45 size case too, and I'm surprised that it is every bit as powerful as the 45.

Jim, your right about the straight up, at a club I used to go to there were 3 Junior60's 2 with old iron cylinder OS15's and 1 that had an OS20 4st all flew well.

Hear hear on the power.
My Jnr 60 has flown very well with Magnum 30FS, OS20FS, and OS26FS. None required full power although the 20 heading that way. Currently sporting a K&B 21 with 11*6 Rev Up. Haven't flown this configuration yet but I doubt there will be a problem.
Great model!

Can't resist joining in ...
Mine has the RAM (Radio Active M...) wheels as well. They're a bit hard to find in Oz but great for old time models

I'll have to try and find some of those wheels. Looks as though they have the vintage look of the Trexlers without leaking down all the time.
Is yours done in silk, johnvb?

No, it's Polyspan (SAMSpan?) - Polyester tissue - glued on with Bostik 1768 which works like a heat activated glue. Doped, then clear Estapol (Polyester) mixed with golden oak colour stain sprayed on. Red enamel which turned out not to be fuel-proof. The RAM wheels are great!

I learned to fly on one of those, see my earlier post about why we fly vintage models.
I was also given an extra wing and was bequeathed a fuselage by my old friend Frank Wall who died before he could finish it. I completed the model and powered by an HP 25 fourstroke, I taught lots of beginners how to fly on a buddy box at our local club.
The Telemaster makes an excellent follow-on four-channel model, but I'll admit I'm biased!

Is that a guitar you're playing? I fronted a band on and off for over 40 years.
My voice lacks power and range these days. Must find people interested in middle of the road stuff.

Yep. That shot's 7-8 years old. I was fronting a blues band at that time. Three or four years ago I had a change of life and started playing bass after nearly 40 years of guitar. Still having fun!

siddus74: So how does she fly?
My own Junior 60 project is almost completed now - just a little more covering and balancing and she'll be about ready to take to the skies again. It was originally built in 1953 and was flown (free-flight) from '54 to '60. Since then it has been gathering dust in the original builder's loft. She was given to me just a few weeks ago and I've now converted it to RC and have an SC .30 4-st standing-by for it - and I can't wait to get her into the air again, as I have fond memories of watching this type of model from when I was a kid. I sure hope she flies as well as I "think" she'll fly!
