Please tell me you can salvage some of the first set! It would kill me to see all that hard work go to waste!

You have already cheated on the fuse! Could you imagine framing up a 1/8 scale steel tube (brass would be cool too) fuse?! Crazy...

Might be able to salvage the root rib and some of the ribs from the tip. The aileron and flap are keepers too. Oh DUH! Y'know, sometimes I wonder how I ever got that degree in engineering. I too despise the thought of wasting all that material and time so guess what? One can take liberty in prototyping and that's exactly what we'll do- keep the top left wing intact, make the top right wing in the same fashion and use them to find and fix any remaining bugs in the overall design. When all is kosher then build the flying wings with spruce. I can't think of a better way to proof the drawings. It will be almost two weeks until the spruce gets here and I'll be able to keep working on it in the meantime. Sound like a plan?

Believe it or not Cody, I actually did think about building a fuselage frame of tubing. The 1/4 scale factory drawings show every detail needed. It is possible to do of course so why not do it? Well, I'm old and would like to see this project finished before judgment day!

LOL you DO have some time on your hands! I've thought about doing a tubular fuse on a giant scale bird- but then my sanity returned and I realized there is NO WAY I could possibly do something like that and still be light enough to fly!

See you in two weeks

Yes, I do have a lot of time on my hands. Perhaps too much. Maybe a tube frame wouldn't be all that heavy? Thin wall tubing is fairly light weight actually. Up the size of the model and there's a perfect candidate for the [link=http://www.robart.com/r780/images/R780%20Running1.rm]Robart R780[/link] which is modeled after the Jacobs powerplant used by WACO and others. Now that would be a truly authentic model. Hmmm... Anyway, click the link to see the R780 running. Watch how the test bench jerks forward at throttle up in the second part of the vid.

Got an e-mail today from Aircraft Spruce saying that the bargain bag of spruce shipped today. It will be here Wednesday. How's that for service? I haven't even started cutting rib parts yet!

We have wood! If you ever wondered what a bargain bag of spruce looks like then have a look at the first pic. There's close to 30 board feet of lumber there. The longest piece is right at 5', the shortest 2'. I think we can find 8 spars in there with plenty left over to work into arrow shafting. The second pic shows the parts to build the top right wing jig sans the base. Hoping to get started on it in the next day or so then get some rib parts cut out in addition to milling some spars. The .pdf file attached is the jig drawing, size greatly reduced.

Finished up the jig for the top right wing. The pics (in order) show the the first station set up to include the dihedral and the 3 end braces; placing the spacers between stations 1 & 2 then checking the second station to make sure it is plumb and perpendicular to the leading edge. The 6th pic shows placement of the spacers between stations 2 & 3. After checking station 3 to make sure it is plumb and perpendicular to the leading edge it was locked down with CA. Repeating the procedure for the remaining stations makes a straight and true wing assembly jig. From the looks of the last pic I need to take some time to do some housekeeping?

Managed to squeeze in some shop time to work on the spruce wing spars. Got all 8 of 'em (4 top, 4 bottom) roughed out then milled the 4 for the top wings to near net shape. A little hand work and final sanding brought 'em right down to size. Now we're off to cut rib parts.

Got some ribs built but haven't had much time to work on it lately. Hoping things slow down soon so more time can be devoted to it.

I imagine building those ribs is quite a task. More then a dozen pieces each- and more then one is custom cut. You must have at least 100 hours into the old set of wings. They look so fantastic I think you should build a static model and leave it naked. Solder up a fuse like you were talking about and place it in a glass box. Maybe send it to the Smithsonian!

Has anyone here tried the Hungerford sliced rib method for built up ribs? I have not, but saved these descriptions some time ago for future reference. Probably only works with thin wood sizes. The last shows a wing someone made with this method, but it was a small plane.

BuzzardBait,
Is there a way I could get a PDF of that attachment, or both? That looks like somethin' that'd really be a help in my shop. I'm constantly on th' hunt for new ways to do stuff and what I could read of that really appealed.
Cheers!

I've seen that before too, and forgot all about it. That looks interesting. If you publish a pdf, could you post it here?

Thanks again for reminding us of that/

All I have is what I saved, but if I email it to you it comes out with much higher res, or so I've been told by people I've sent things to. I will try doing that for both of you.

Not for sure how many hours in that wing Cody. Guessing 50-55 to get it that far. A see through static model would be interesting, mebbe something for the WACO museum?

Jim, I'm not familiar with that technique. It looks to be a real time saver for building up a wing having a constant chord length, not so much for others. Keeping the airfoil shape true to form would be my main concern with this method. I can picture the intent of building a NACA 2410, for example, and ending up with something totally different. Perhaps that's why a jig or form is needed to do the glue up to insure the accuracy of the intended shape?

I am most interested in your progress. As the C model Waco is very undermodelled I too wish to model one. I enlarged the Skymasters YQC plan that appeared in Model Builder magazine many moons ago. Although the model is for rubber power the designer did an extraordinary job of duplicating the full scale Waco C-6. Many ZQC-6 were used in Canada and Alaska and 2 were bought by the RCAF. They were black with yellow wings, empenage and Reg'n Numbers. Really sharp. This plan would yield a fantastic static model. From the complete interior shown/drawn in great detail to the wing fillets that would have to be reproduced in any flying version larger than the intended design it would challenge the best as you know.

All the Best!!
