Orion Plans

I have an Orion kit..about 90 to 95% complete...ribs punched out and perhaps a few bulkheads missing..but the rest of it is there....I think.. I bought it some years ago from a local who is now deceased, who assured me it was all there...and later I found out he had punched out all the parts..etc,., etc.. I built one way back when the kit first came out, with reeds, of course, and a K&B 45...also a warped wing that I could never straighten.
Even soaked the framework in a bathtub and then clamped it in a specially made frame and when dry, it snapped right back where it had been....but with some aileron trim, it flew pretty well.......so, now after all these decades, I am going to build it...again... for perhaps a VCRCS event. Will probably fly it with an older OS 40FSR...unless someone has a better suggestion.
Now I think there was an instruction book, and if so, is not in this box...and also I have two sheets of plans. One sheet is marked "Plate one" and has the fuselage and one wing panel. The other sheet has the stab....
What I need to know is--------- if anyone can tell me if there was a third sheet, or one built the wing, both sides, from the single half wing drawing... In the old days, I rubbed the plans with cooking oil and flipped it over....
Thanks.....

Top Flite Orion kit? Two plates and an assembly and operating manual. Plate one has the fuselage, fin and rudder, as well as the left wing panel shown. Plate two has the right wing panel, stab and elevator, fuselage side preassembly, and an isometric view of the airframe.

The manual is a couple of sheets of paper folded in half, stapled in the middle to make a small booklet.

Should make a great project!

Hmmm..it looks like I have only half of plate two...is it possible to persuade you to get a copy of that part of the plans?? Happy to pay all charges...
Thank you,
Frank

Hello Frank,

Now you have your plans, I can show you the pictures of my new Orion,
It has the span of the Taurus, Enya 10 cc 4 stroke powered and all wooden construction.
Air operated, spring return retracts, silk and dope covered, ready for take off.
Now you have an idea what your are building.

I remember seeing the Orion in a magazine; it was "The most expensive airplane kit ever produced." It was $37.50. In my 1963 World Engines catalog the "New VK Cherokee" was $19.95. Sigh.

Hello Michpittsman,

In the Netherlands I did see pictures of the Taurus and Tauri, not the Orion.
It was in 1966 I think.

Thanks da50ex,

Yes I am happy with it,
After a few messages from Jim Messer about the Taurus and how the change a Taurus for proportional I decided to built the Orion. The fuselage is a few inches shorter!
Because of the weight of the engine I did have to built it a little bigger. the retracts I did make myself.
Both legs are retracted by one piston, the air can is mounted in the center section of the wing, also the valve and single aileron servo.
Just like the original Orion it has frise ailerons.

When the engine runs OK and the sound is acceptable I will fly this plane for the first time this weekend.
